So I figured I'd ask you ladies instead of getting screamed at on another page.. So in the interest of saving money, I want to do just one outside envelope on our invites instead of the inner and outer envelope. This being said is there a way to address an invite of someone plus guest on an outer envelope? I know you're only supposed to do it on the inner envelope but I really don't want an inner envelope. The ones that come with our invites aren't that fancy though, so then I wonder if I should upgrade to nicer ones or if they can be easily purchased at Staples or Office Max for cheap and then use the ones that come with the invites for an inner envelope... so many questions I know, but I'm a bit confused at the moment.. any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I am not using an inner envelope.  I am going to try to find out the name of my guests' plus 1s.  If I can't, I am just going to write "and guest" on the outer envelope.  I think it is becoming more common to skip the inner envelope.

    My invitations didn't come with an inner envelope, and I consider them a pointless waste of paper anyway, so I'm not using them. I plan to get around it by addressing the outer envelope to the person I'm directly inviting, and if there's a plus one, I'll write on the RSVP card that two seats have been reserved for them. If I already know who their guest will be, I'll address it to both names. It may not be perfect etiquette, but it's functional!

    It's perfectly fine to do this, and unless you're having a REALLY formal wedding, I think most brides opt for only an outer envelope anyway.

    Make every effort to find out the name of your guest's SO. If they are truly single (or don't get back to you after a few attempts to contact them) then it's ok to write "Jane Doe and Guest."

    FI and I still don't understand the whole inner and outer envelope concept. We are using an outer one only and are going to find out the names of everyone's plus ones and put them on there. We are not inviting +1s for single guests though. If you are, that may be more difficult.

    Our invitation suite didn't come with the outer envelope.  I found an outer envelope on Paper Source that perfectly matched the color of the inner and RSVP envelopes that came with our invitation suite (Super Fine White)  (http://www.paper-source.com/cgi-bin/paper/color/A7.5-envelopes/2506.001/106.html).  So, I'm just going to order the outer envelopes from here.

    I know that some people choose not to do the inner/outer envelope thing, but we're trying to follow formal ettiquette rules for our formal wedding.  Plus, I think it's an easy way to make it clear exactly who is and who is not invited to your wedding (example in some cases we are inviting John and Jane Doe and their kids, in other cases we are just inviting Dave and Sarah Smith w/o their kids).  We're also doing +1's for anyone over 18, so we'll be writing and guest or the guest's name if we know it on the inner envelope as well.

    Oh, I forgot to add...

    If you want to buy just the outside envelope, you need to buy A7.5 envelopes (if your invite is a 5X7 invite).  The inner envelope would be an A7, but the outer envelope needs to be slightly larger (A7.5) so that the inner envelope will fit inside of the outer.  I don't think Office max sells A 7.5 envelopes.

    I just went through this whole thing so I know way too much about envelope sizes now LOL!

    We're doing inner envelopes at the wishes of our parents. Plus, we're not doing the whole pocketfold invite stuff, we're just doing a flat invite, RSVP card, and an insert with accommodation info. So with the inner envelope, it keeps everything together.
