Getting in Shape

Ow Ow Ow.

So, my FI got the konnect for X-box360, and he got a workout game called My Shape.  I did the cardio yesterday, and the day before.  The front muscles in my thighs hurt so bad.  I can barely go up the stairs.  They have been like this since the first night I did this.  Is this normal, or have I overdone it?

  • I feel like part of it is normal. Maybe don't do it everyday until some of the soreness goes away!
  • (Those muscles are called your quadriceps, or just your "quads" if you're cool.)

Maybe you overdid it. Try taking a day off or do a LIGHT workout, making sure you do something that gets the blood flowing to those muscles (like walking/jogging down a not-too-steep hill).

You didn't overdo it. If you did, you would REALLY know it. Try to switch up your workouts. Like for example mine - Cardio/Legs one day Cardio/arms and abs. That way you're giving those muscles a day of rest which is very important. Working them everyday will cause damage to them.

  • I find that the days following a new exercise leave my various muscles rather sore, so if it was movements new to you, being sore is normal.

If it is just delayed onset muscle soreness (or DOMS if you're really cool) then it's fine.  Some soreness is expected when you stress your muscles.  This usually shows up 12-36 hours after you workout and can last for a few days if you really pushed it, or it was something new.

If it was a sharp stabbing pain that occurred while you were doing the exercise, that's bad.

To help get rid of the DOMS, be sure to stretch, drink plenty of water and, like arwo suggested, do some light exercise.

Also, for the future, it's generally not advisable to work the same muscle groups 2 days in a row.  Ideally you'd like to give them 2-3 days of rest in between, so maybe do the workout every other day, and alternate between workouts each time.

  • Give you muscles time to rest. If you don't--they don't have time to build. Also make sure you stretch. I hate stretching but if I don't I get really sore.
  • STRETCH after you work out! and work out opposing muscle groups... quads and hamstrings, back and abs, biceps and triceps etc...
