Her mom has had cancer for at least 8ish years and she has been bed bound and living with my bff for the past 3 months. Cancer started in her colon then spread to her lungs. It is now also in her bowels, abdomen and she has a tumor in her brain that has doubled in size over the past month. She is in the hospital right now because tumors are obstructing her bowel. The brain tumor is making her incoherent and she is pulling out tubes and fighting with the staff.
BFF has been funding her mother's medicine and living expenses for quite a while (even though she has two brothers who both live nearby and are more than capable of helping, but they are immature and her mom seems to agree that these are things to be handled by a daughter only) and is tapped out both financially and emotionally. Taking care of her mother has been espeically difficult because living with someone post-colon surgery is not fun...especially when that person can't see (because of the brain tumor) or think straight to know what kind of messes (really, really TMI, you don't want to know) they are making.
On top of it all, even though she needed it a loooong time ago, her mom only agreed to go to sign a medical and legal power-of-attorney papers once she developed the tumor in her brain that started affecting her vision and cognitive skills. She hasn't been herself in years, but I guess this was the first medical evidence she had of it. My friend took her to a lawyer several weeks ago but the lawyer hasn't gotten the papers back to them and now her mom isn't in a state of mind to be able to sign anything anymore.
I've thought the end was near for the past two years, but it seems like now more than ever she might not make it back out of the hospital. I'm feeling selfish because I've always promised BFF that I would be there when the time came, but I'm planning on being on a 10 day vacation starting on Thursday. I haven't been much help thus far living 3 hours away.
Anyway, if you can spare a vibe or a prayer for my BFF, she could really use it today.
