Lighting for an Outdoor Wedding...Ideas?

Looking for people who have had an open-air outdoor wedding.

What lighting did you use, where did you get it, was it bright enough?

I was thinking about using string lights, not sure what to use.

Help?!

Re: Lighting for an Outdoor Wedding...Ideas?

  • I'm going to stalk this post because I'm trying to figure out the same thing. We have 2 adjacent picnic sites with one outlet per site so I'm trying to find non electric options. Here's what I know so far...
White is the brightest color for lights. Christmas icicle lights give you a lot of light for your $. Real candles are brighter than battery ones. We are using tiki torches to line the pathways and will put the battery operated lights (that I bought when I didn't know they were only spot type lights) in jars on the ground also. Paper lanterns with battery operated candles will be in a stand on each table, real candles in clear glass jars will also be on the table. So far, not enough light but an hoping for both of our sakes that other girls have great ideas.
  • I would seriously recommend checking out christmas light options. You would be surprised on how much stuff you can find that isn't really Christmas specific. One idea I would consider is Solar lights. We got white icicle lights that are solar powered and they are amazing. Super bright at night, you can't tell the different. I loved that I didn't have to worry about plugging them in. Even on cloudy days they work, just not really bright, but still noticable. I've also found regular string lights that are solar powered. I've also seen all sorts of path markers & other things that are solar powered.

They will be more expensive then electrical lights, but nice thing is that you won't have to worry about running cords or finding electrical outs. And then you can reuse them at home for the holidays or to light up your backyard even in the summer. We got solar powered outdoor lights from Target (bridal shower gift) that we're going to use around our deck to light it up in the summer.

We used a mixture of string lights and a ton of candles and it was definitely enough. Our centerpieces were large hurricanes with floating candles and on top of satin linens the light reflected really well.
