Will people participate?

So FI and I were talking about our wedding last night, and one subject that came up was our theme.  He doesn't care about much, but tends to think anything that strays from a very cookie-cutter version of a wedding is weird and that no one will like it.  I disagree, though who knows.

We (okay, I, since he doesn't give a sh*t about any of it except the ceremony and the food) want to have a mild game theme to the wedding.  I'm thinking about having Scrabble pieces or dice as part of the escort cards, each table will be named after a popular board game, have wedding-related MadLibs on the tables, have little goodie bags for all the little kids full of coloring books and games, and having lawn games during cocktail hour.

Now FI says only the kids will do the MadLibs and the lawn games, and that it's a waste of money (not that either is particularly expensive, and it certainly is within budget).  He doesn't mind the idea in general, but thinks it's silly to have a theme at all (the only weddings he has ever been to are at a church, then have a buffet reception at a big hall, and then some dancing and that's it.  I doubt there's even been colors besides white, let alone anything unique).  I get that a wedding is a wedding and it certainly doesn't NEED a theme, but I thought this would be a cute way of encorporating something that is very personal and important for us as a couple without going overboard.  And I DO think that people will play croquet and bocce and beanbag toss (known as 'cornhole' to you Southerners!) during cocktail hour!

So... would you fill out the MadLibs form?  Would you play lawn games during cocktail hour?  Or would you think it was all a bit silly?

I would do it. At the wedding I went to a little over a year ago, we were each given a piece of paper that was sort of like a Mad Lib to fill out during the cocktail hour; the bride and groom later took those papers and bound them together into a guest book. It was fun, it let us cut loose and gave us suggestions for what to write, and it totally fit them.

As for all the other activities, I would definitely participate! I think that sounds like a lot of fun!

I would do it.  I think it is a cute way to fill in the time during the cocktail hour when the professional photos are being taking (you know the wedding party, B/G parents pictures) you get my drift.  I think it is always hard to think about what to do during that 45 minutes before the wedding party/bride and groom arrive at the reception.

Besides who doesn't love a good mad lib?!

I think it's a really great idea. I voted that I might do one or the other just because it would depend on how I felt that night as to if I would actively participate in the lawn games, but even if I didn't participate, I would have a ton of fun watching those that did play!

I would do it. To me, a wedding is a big party that you're paying for, so you should do whatever you want.... but I also think it's cute and fun, and I love madlibs and board games....plus if you do a seating chart kind of thing, it can be a good icebreaker at the tables.

I would definitely be all for it!  I would have a ton of fun filling out the mad libs, and I know our guests would have done it.  We considered doing something like this, but just went with a traditional guest book that hardly anyone signed.  I wish we would have done something more fun now.

The lawn games I think would be awesome too.  It's all about knowing your crowd though.  Not every idea works for every wedding and every guest list.  If you have a fun group, a lot of younger guests, or just guests who like to play games, then they would probably be all for the games.  I know i would totally kick off the heels and play if I was there.  But if you have a guest list full of people like your H who don't think that stuff belongs at a wedding, then I think it might be a waste.

Yes!  Absolutely I would participate.  Sounds like a fun time.  I saw on pinterest a cute RSVP madlib if you're interested.  I think themes are fun.

I agree with dnb that it depends on the crowd though.  If you think they'd be up for it I say go for it!  It's a great way to pass some time between ceremony and reception.

I like it, and I think you'll get some awesome pics from it. The one thing I would worry about is how long a game of bocce or croquet takes (I have no idea). You don't want people to get super into it and then have to leave it. But I'd play casually for a bit. I do think it's a 'know your crowd' situation.

Thanks guys.  At least we know the GIRLS might play!  :-)

Seriously, we won't have enough equipment for literally everyone to play croquet, bocce, or corn hole.  I figure maybe 1/3 of the guests will play, and that would be plenty.

FI would be the first one out there playing, he always is at any sort of party.  He just has such a narrow idea of what a wedding is so he can't imagine anything else.  His sisters and Mom are much more the "Is everyone else doing it?  Because then I might think about it.  Otherwise it's weird."  So I get where he's coming from with the skepticism - they won't be leading the pack for sure!  But our friends and my family will, I'm pretty sure.  So his family can sit back and watch if they don't want to play.  You're never going to please everyone, right?

We are actually having some games at our wedding! My family loves to play bag toss when we go camping, and so does my FI, so that's a definate. We also play testicle golf when camping (aka Polish golf..not sure what other names there are) but I feel like that could be dangerous indoors. FI and I also love Scrabble, so I'm making square cookies, some with letters to probably spell our names, to make a board!

I love the idea! It would make the wedding so much more memorable and fun!

I'm having a Marie Antoinette/Versailles 'theme' for my wedding. Well it's more of an atmosphere than theme. So I'm all for having a non-cookie cutter wedding. ;)

I would do the madlibs but more than likely not do the yard games.

<div>Haha! There are two teams of two. You try to throw this rope with a golf ball on each end (hence the "testicle") onto these rungs, usually made of pvc pipe. each level is worth different points</div>

I would. I get bored easily and I love games like that. I love the bean bag toss stuff.

I think as long as its not over done and you don't have people playing during speeches or dinner its fine.

With that being said, I'm not saying NO one should be playing the bean bag toss game during that stuff. Leave it out for restless kids. Just make sure its not where it could ruin someones speech
Military Brides December 2011 Siggy. Holiday picture with your SO. We suck and don't have one :/ Those who matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter.

I'm all about breaking with tradition, so I wouldn't think the theme was stupid or silly, but I also probably wouldn't take part.

I like going to weddings specifically for the food, drink, and dancing.  So that's what I would be doing...  getting tipsy then making a fool of myself on your dance floor.
