Can you cancel alternations after already being fitted at David's Bridal?

Ugh, I'm not sure what to do here.  I went to David's Bridal on Tuesday for my first  dress fitting.  It needed to be be brought up a few inches, a bustle, and to be brought in on the sides (which was going to be pricey because there was bead work).  I went knowing it was going to be expensive, but I nearly died when I go the bill for $330!!!!  Oh god!!!!  So I posted on Facebook how crazy I thought DB was with their alterations.   I had a lot of friends respond telling me how they went to good old mom and pop places and spent a quarter of the amount DB quoted them.  My questions is, is it too late to back out of DB since they already saw me and did the pinning to my dress?  I spoke with someone at DB yesterday and they hadn't started doing the alterations yet.  Has anyone ever encountered this before?  II've already paid the $330, I'm wondering if they will just take a a fee for the time they spend and give me the rest back *crossing my fingers*.

  • When you spoke to them yesterday and they stated they hadn't started cutting and sewing yet, why didn't you tell them you would like to take it elsewhere?  They would be the best ones to tell you if they would charge you or not.

  • How far were they on your dress?

  • Just the pinning was done at this point,  no cutting or sewing yet.  I'm going to call and talk to them, I just wanted to know if it was completely strange and rude to even think such a thing.

You have full control over where you pay for the service of having your dress altered.  Frankly, I'd never pay for alterations up front.... I'm paying per hour and will be billed when it's finished.  $330 seems really high for alterations.

<div>The gown is yours.  You have every right to take it whenever you want (as long as it is paid for).  My assumption is they will make pay for whatever work has been done at that point.</div>

  • I'd do what PP said.  Ask DB to hold off and do some research to see which is going to be best priced.  You can always have mom and pop do your alterations and then have DB do your bustle if that's what it comes down to.  It's your dress and they should respect your wishes.  Especially since you already bought your dress there.
