FI wedding band

Hey ladies
I had a question are tungsten carbide rings good bands? Like i heard mixed things about them so what is your take about it? What kind of ring would you reccomend for a man who is always lifting, pulling, and moving things?

Thanks a billion!

Re: FI wedding band

  • Does your FI work in a field where he could be shocked?
  • no. maybe like if he touched someone yea but not with eletricty..lol

  • Tungsten carbide can work but so can any metal.  Just know that some will 'wear' more than others.  Gold is soft so over time, any design in it will begin to "fade" as the metal wears.

Platinum is quite hard and will develop a patina over time as will palladium which is very similar in property to platinum at a portion of the cost.

I'd avoid any plated metal like white gold.
  • ok. thank you.
because i was going to do the tungsten carbide i heard they crack easy and stuff and i dont want to buy something that going to crack easy lol.
  • I've heard that tungsten and titanium are the best for manual laborers, because they don't scratch as much. However, they are hard, if impossible, to size, so you have to buy the right size.

I am contemplating titanium for FI. He works on computers, but I don't want his ring to get as scratched up as my platinum e-ring has gotten.

  • My FI got a titanium band. It's true that can't be resized so be sure you get one that fits right. He works outside and is very rough on his hands, so he needed a band that is lightweight and cheap, because guaranteed he will lose it within a few months, if even that long.

We got a beautiful fring from zales for like $70, so no big deal if he loses or or it gets scratched up. But I still can't wait to see it on him!
  • DH has a white gold band.  He doesn't wear it to work because he's afraid of something happening to it, or his finger because of it, but he liked white gold the best.  If it gets scratched we just take it to the store and have them re-plate it.  It looks good as new afterwards.
  • ok ladies thank you. i will see how my budget is when it comes time to get his ring to see if i can get the platinum if not i will probably get the tugsten..

  • It sounds like you have decided, but I was told that they crack very easily and to basically stay away from them if FI works with his hands...Mine is a trucker so we decided against it....We went with white gold instead and he'll probably only wear when we go out rather than wearing it while he works...We did look at titanium though and we were told that although it really can't be resized it won't crack as easily as tunsten.
  • Yes his ring had a nice shine to it. He picked out one of the laser engraved rings and it's awesome. :)
  • ok im going to research a little bit because i wanna make sure im making the right choice.. thanks for the feedback ladies.
  • We talked to a really great jeweler who knew his stuff. FI works with his hands as he does manual labor for a living. The jeweler recommended Titanium or Tungsten. I was leaning towards white gold because of hearing titanium can't be cut off in the event of an emergency... however, after talking to this jeweler, that's false and gold would scratch and wear too quickly with FI's profession.. If titanium or tungsten rings need to be cut off, they (EMS) would have to make 2 cuts as opposed to the usual one cut for gold rings. Just fyi...

The jeweler said that tungsten carbide cracks if something extreme happens (he said mechanic and having your ring finger smashed under the hood of a car, extreme). Tungsten is actually a very strong metal (4x stronger than titanium) and is very resistant to damage, whereas, tungsten carbide is prone to chipping, cracking, etc.

We ended up finding a tungsten band and the jeweler at Kay's (different than the first guy) told us that tungsten can only be sized once.
  • ok thanks for the info steph.
