Name change question

I have to get my name change on my SS card and driver's license done between June 7 and July 16 due to flights.  We have a copy of the signed marriage license that the pastor gave us after the ceremony.  It will take us 2 weeks to get a copy of our marriage certificate mailed to us, which is cutting it kind of close to get everything changed.  (Today was the first day we could request it.)

I can't find anything on the SS website about it, but I'm assuming they need a marriage certificate and not a just copy of the signed marriage license to do the change, correct?

Re: Name change question

  • Yeah, you have to have the certified copy from the Clerk's Office (or whatever county agency handles it in your area).

  • Yes, they need an official copy of your marriage license.
  • Yeah, that's what I figured.  Ugh.  I am stressed about having to do it in such a short time frame, but with my job I don't get too much down time between flights and it will only get worse this fall.

  • Can you pick up the certified copy instead of having it mailed?  That might save a couple days.

  • Yeah, Brie. Dani's right. You should be able to go to the Clerk's Office and get a copy right then & there. Easy peasy!
  • I think they told me 2 weeks, so I just called around the 2 week mark and it was ready.  I just popped in, picked up a couple copies, and was out of there.

  • Question kind of realtion- When you go in to the SS office, does your name change immediatly the day  you file the paperwork, or does it take a few days and not official til you receive everything in the mail?

  • They give you a printout with your new info on it to take to the DMV. You get your card in the mail within a week or two.
  • I wouldn't be able to pick it up since we got married in Chicago and live 8 hours away.  It's a PITA.

Luckily I have Mondays off work for the summer so I will have plenty of time.

They gave me a printout that basically said I had applied for the name change, and I took that print out to get my new driver's license.  I've heard others say they had to wait to get the actual new SS card in the mail, but I didn't.  As far as when it officially changes, I think when you have been to the SS office and have a new driver's license, it's official.  You still have to go through the process of letting everyone know though - banks, insurance companies, student loans, credit cards, etc.

  • Hmm, they told me to wait a few days before I went to the DMV.  I didn't get any official print out.

  • I was not able to take the print out to the BMV, I had to wait for my card to come in the mail....that took 7days.

Once the SS office changes it in there system though, it only takes 24hours to change.
  • Sucrets, they told me I had to wait 24 hours, but they did give me a printout to take with me.

  • I don't remember if I had to wait 24 hrs or not before going to the DMV. But I started changing my name on things immediately.
  • Brie-  when did you get married?  I received our official marriage license in about 7-10 days in the mail.

  • We were married on May 8, a little over 3 weeks ago.  In Chicago, the pastor signs the license and mails it in after the ceremony, and then you have to wait three weeks to request a copy of the certificate.  Which takes 10-14 days in the mail.  Lame.

  • Mine was similar, except I had to get my new DL first, since the Clark County certificate didn't show anywhere what my new name would be.

We had to wait (but our officiant filed it the following Monday), then write to get an official certified copy of the certificate.  I paid for two copies, I think.

I had to sign an affadavit at the DMV place stating my new name, get my new DL, THEN go back to the SS office to get my new card. Which they still got wrong and had to redo 2 weeks later (either I didn't pay attention, or the guy didn't show me anything to proof before he put it through). My DL was correct, though. If he'd read that......

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew

Wow you have to request a copy??  When I was at the clerks office, we filled out an envelope for them to send us the original.  Notary signed the marriage license that DH & I signed plus witnesses.  Once it was recorded through the clerks office, got the official seal & was mailed to us.  I have the original
  • not to freak you out, but ours took abotu a month to come in.  not because the town clerk was slow, but becuase the priest took so long to send the form in.  we didnt care though, i didnt change my name so it wasnt that important that we get it right away.
  • Hmm, I like the way Michigan(or at least Berrien County) handles Marriage Licenses. We got two copies, the pastor filled both of them out, we all signed and I got my offical copy right after the ceremony. I went to Social Security last Monday and the DMV on Tuesday- had to wait 24 hours for the name change to be offical in the computers. I just got my new SS card in the mail today.
I'm sure it will work out, you can always carry around a bunch of different paperwork (license, marriage license, passport, driver's license) to prove you're the same person until everything is the same.

  • I did it all the same day. First I went to the court to grab the marriage certificate, went straight to the SS office, got a paper to take to the DMV and they printed off my new license there. Then went with new license and marriage certificate in hand to the bank and got that switched over.
A year later and I'm still finding random accounts with my maiden name...it's fun...
