Anyone using self tanner?

I'm very caucasian if you will and I burn very easily and freckle. I a little paranoid about skin cancer to reagular tanning isn't really an option. I have bathing suit tanlines from a year ago that wont go away so I'm thinking about using a self tanning lotion for the wedding. Anyone else in the same boat? Does anyone have suggestions on what brand to get with out breaking the bank? I really want it to be light and not smelly and definitely not sticky or thick because I don't want it rubbing off on my dress!

Re: Anyone using self tanner?

  • I really like the Dove gradual tanning lotion. I think I tried a Jergins kind too but it smelled kinda weird so I stopped using it. If you use gradual tanner than you can use it in the weeks leading up to the wedding rather than put it on that day where it could rub off.

I'm also very pale and I always burn when I tan so I'm going to do a spray tan for the wedding. I tried it out a couple weeks ago and it didn't look orange or anything. The only weird thing was that about a week after the tan my skin got really patchy for a couple days. Thanksfully I was able to scrub most of it off by that point.
  • I like Dove's self tanner, as well. However, I'd be nervous that it would rub off on my dress if I were sweating or anything. I know from experience that using any self tanner, to not wear white in the summer because it's always coming off on clothes.

I'm very freckly..when I say that I mean freckles everywhere. My skin is also very fair, but I tan in tanning beds with good lotion. I started out gradually and worked my way up. I burn very easily, but that's why it's important to gradually tan so you can build a "base tan" and go from there.
  • Just be careful if you are going to do the spray tan.  I used to get it quit frequently, and they will tell you it wont wear off on your clothes; sorry, but it does.  I went to Vegas a few years ago and had the spray tan done 2 days before we left, on the 2nd day we were there, so 4th day with the tan I wore a white bikini top at the pool; when I went to shower later I noticed the tanner had gotten all over the top.  I dont know if had something to do with the mix of the sunscreen, sweat, and water; but, I would just be very very cautious.

I'm in the same boat as you, I don't want to use a tanning bed, but my tan lines have to go! I started using's Sephora's spray tanner before my shower, and it works like a charm! Completely covered up my tan lines and did not make me look orange at all! I've been using it for about a month now, and it still looks great after touch ups. I think you get what you pay for with self tanners.

Also, I wore a white dress to my shower, and no self tanner rubbed off at all. I would make sure its completely dry after applying!

  • I don't remember what I used when I was in a beauty pageant (yes, it was a wonderful time, unfortunately I lost but I still had a blast).  It was a small can that you just used for that day (spray tanner), and it didn't seem to wash off until I swam the next day (after the parade, because I wore the same dress for the parade).  I did have a little bit of brown on the dress where it was really sticking to me during the parade though.

I'm debating using a lotion with tanning in it (like Jergen's or Dove) because I don't tan, I burn!!  I also am paranoid about skin cancer and have had a few biopsies done because I had thought moles looked bad (so did the doctors).  Luckily everything has come back benign so far!!

  • I like the gradual tanning lotions.  If you're getting a little more tan everyday and not just doing one application, you don't have to worry about streaks, splotches, or getting too dark.  You can always build up lots of color and then just use regular lotion to maintain the color 2-3 days before your wedding so you don't have to worry about it rubbing off on your dress.  I've been hitting the tanning salon for about a month now, bad habit, I know, but I do appreciate how much better a white dress looks next to a tan me!
