Alternative to Rice HELP

I have plenty of time but one thing that is haunting me... Do  I have to allow my guests to throw something at me?  I am getting married in July 2011.  I dont want to do rice or bird seed, everyone does bubbles so no not that.  I like the idea of sparklers but is that safe? (and it will only be 5 p.m. aka not dark)  My sister did pinwheels which was beautiful and fun but is taken. Any other thoughts?

help!

  • No, you do not have to do anything.

  • You will still be legally married, even if people don't throw things at you.  I personally think that nothing says "we're married" like being pelted with stuff.

Have people clap and cheer.  It's free, easy, eco-friendly, non-violent, and not lame.

You don't have to do anything.  I too was trying to think of something other than rice.  and bubbles.  I'm having a December wedding so I'm thinking of fake snow.  but hmmm....summer wedding.....I've heard of sparklers but would hate to burn a hole in such an expensive dress!

  • Also, OP, check with your venue about things being tossed.  Many don't allow it.  The church in which I work doesn't.  Rice, flower petals:  PITA to clean up and the rice is bad for birds and is a slipping hazard.  Bird seed?  draws birds and their poop and is a slipping hazard.

So check.  There might be limits on what you can do at all.

  • You don't have to do anything at all. What about just clapping when you exit the church?
  • We're doing bubbles; you can get special "wedding bubbles" which come in very small containers and won't harm your dress.

pssst:  regular bubbles won't harm your dress either.  "wedding bubbles" are just regular bubbles in a small container that you pay more for because it says "wedding bubbles" on it.

    ticker tape, or eco-friendly confetti

  • Most places don't allow stuff to be thrown anyhow. Unnecessary cost and it all is pretty lame.
  • I am working on this too.  I like bubbles, but they are forbidden at our reception venue due to fountains and fish so  I am worried people will bring them out especially for the kids in the outside courtyard. I am thinking clapping and cheering or pennants waving of our favorite team.  My cousin had people release balloons in honor to her dad which I would like to do but our ceremony site and reception venue do not allow balloons.

  • If you just want to do the clapping thing you could alter it slightly by having your guests make a tunnel with their arms while cheering yall away and singing. My friend did it and her guests liked it.. felt more intimate to them I guess, .. and zero cleanup!
  • I had been worrying about this a couple weeks ago.  We've decided on fresh lavendar buds.  It's easy, smells pretty, and is biodegradable and won't need to be cleaned up (if you're outside).

    Anniversary
  • Bells! Then your guests can keep them as favors :)
