Dress Alterations

Have you thought about the timeline for your fittings? I've seen a few different "schedules" for them, and I'm trying to figure out where I should look into getting my dress altered. (bought it in CO, temporarily living in VA, getting married in IN.) I've seen as few as 6 weeks as the first alteration, and as many as about 10 weeks. And then the last fitting as few as a week before and as much as two weeks before.

Re: Dress Alterations

  • The place where I got my dress told me six weeks. That makes me nervous, because I live in New York and am getting married in Rhode Island. Six weeks before, for me, will be insanely busy at work, and difficult for me to get up to RI. So, I'm giving myself more like 10 weeks so I can gaurentee myself enough time. And also for my own piece of mind.

  • I called a local seamtress in my area to ask her when she thought would be a good time to start with the alterations.  She had me setup an appointment for a consultation at the end of July.  She probably won't start the alterations right then, she more wants to see how much needs to be done and then give me a price.

  • I think it depends on the style dress.  My dress has a corset back so I just needed the alterations for the hem and bustle.
  • My dress has come in and I am going to my first fitting in a few weeks (It would have been today but I had to cancel.) I basically plan on taking it home with me as soon as alterations are complete. I have been the same size since the 8th grade (I was a tall 8th grader at 5'10" but that's how it goes!) so I'm not worried about it not fitting now vs. in October. I'm also secretly hoping that I don't need any alterations since the sample size I tried fit perfectly and I ordered that size - no hemming even necessary! (Fingers crossed!)
Basically, if you think your size won't change, if it gives you piece of mind to physically own the dress in your posession (possession? I can't spell), then do it as soon as possible.
