My dress is ivory: what do I do about the tux?

I went to a tux shop a few weeks ago to just look at tuxes. The girl there told me that because my dress is ivory, I should have the guys where ivory shirts. My fiance will also have a matching tie and vest while the groomsmen will have a black tie and vest. The fathers are wearing gray/silver ties and vests.
I then went to another of the same tux shops and they made it seem like no one ever wears ivory shirts. Once we looked it up online, we saw that it was a real debate. Has anyone had an ivory dress and what did you do for the tuxes? I'm worried my dress will look yellow next to the white shirts, but don't know what to do about the dads if we do ivory shirts, because I'm not sure ivory and gray/silver will look good. Is this a big deal or am I just being crazy? Thanks.

If it's just the shirt it won't be a huge deal. I would still go with ivory shirts just to be safe. My dress is ivory and my FI is wearing a full ivory tux because the full white tux looked way too white next to my dress.

Your dress will not look ivory next to his white shirt. Think about it, only a few inches of his shirt/vest will be showing in comparison to yard and yards of your dress. Plus, the only way to really see the difference in color is when you hold the fabric next to each other, not inches or feet away.

My dress is ivory and my FI is wearing a white shirt with ivory tie/vest. No problem.

Rlavach is correct- also frequently the "ivory" shirts from the tux rental places are much more yellow than an ivory bridal gown.

Same. My dress was ivory, but it was more off-white than a yellow ivory. I think the tux ivory was too yellow for my dress. I preferred the stark white.

My dress is ivory too. We decided on off-white shirts, which is a pale ivory. They aren't a yellowish color at all nor a stark white. I'd suggest going with something like that.

Yeah I'd say it would depend what they consider "ivory," if it's yellowish looking and your dress is more off white you might be better with white shirts. If their ivory is close to the shade of your dress it might look good.

I had an ivory/champagne dress and DH (and GM) wore white shirts. You can't tell the difference in color especially since most of thier white is covered with their jackets.

I got told conflicting information at 2 different rental places as well.

One girl told me my dress would look "dingy" if my H wore a white shirt with my ivory dress. But personally I think ivory shirts look "dingy" no matter what, and I don't think I've ever seen a guy actually wear one.

Take a sample of your dress in (a scrap from your alterations) if you're worried, to hold it up and see what you like best. In the end no one will notice the colour of the guys' shirts except you.

My H wore a white shirt, white tie, white vest, and I wore an ivory gown. We looked smashing together, if I do say so myself.

Thanks for the picture...that was helpful. I can see the difference, but it doesn't look bad. My only worry is that mine is a yellowish ivory

My dress was ivory and my hubby was super adamant that he had to have a white shirt. When he went to look at tuxes, the salesgirl made a mock up with a tux that had an ivory shirt/vest with a black tux and he loved the look. The rest of the guys wore a black tux with a white shirt and black tie/vest. In the pictures his ivory set looks great and sets him apart, but it wasn't yellowish in hue either with the tux or in the pictures. Depending on where he goes, they can probably put something together so he could do a comparision, but the ivory was a nice subtle look to match my ivory lace dress. Hope that helps.

you could do what I did and get online and go to www.alsformalwear.com and design his tux...my dress is Ivory and i went with an ivory jacket red tie and black shirt....it all depends on the colors you want him to wear...hope this helps

I honestly really would not concern yourself with the color of his shirt. It really won't make a difference and no one will notice it anyways.

My H wore an ivory shirt, not because my dress was an off-white but because it looked better with the ivory/cream vest then the white shirt did. His GMs wore a white shirt because it looked better with the dark purple vest then the ivory shirt did. I never even considered the color of my dress in the decision because I knew that the shirts would hardly show.

My dress was ivory, and my H wore an ivory shirt with an ivory tie. It looked really good. I know you wouldn't think that an ivory tie on an ivory shirt would look that impressive, but he looked wonderful.

Thanks girls for all of the advice. It's mixed reviews but I think the best thing to do will be to get a sample of my dress (which sadly I didn't now I could do) and determine how yellow/ivoy my dress really is. Thanks for sharing pictures and advice. I'm glad to know that others had the same concnerns as the second sales lady made it seem like I was crazy.

Hello, first of all, congrats! I am wearing a light ivory dress, more of a creamy white than stark white or yellow. I was told by the bridal shopgirl & the tux shop attendant that ivory was the way to go but I was so nervous because I only saw very yellow/beige ivory shirts. Until I went to Freeman Formals in Toronto, Ontario. I wanted the James Bond look so we chose a beautiful, traditional Alfred Sung 2 button tux with the satin lapels & outside seam on the pants. Flat front pants, black bowties & cumberbund for everyone. They also had a brand new ivory shirt that had just arrived and it was perfect, almost the exact color of my dress. We also looked at it with a white shirt side-by-side & it looked better than the white. We also chose turn down collar rather than wing-collar. My FH will wear an ivory pocket square along with his boutoniere & the BM, GM & dads will only wear their boutonieres. Although the pics with white shirt/ivory shirt look are not "bad", I can definetely see the difference. If you can find a very light ivory, I say go for it! Ivory alos looks better on most skin types than white, just like it does for us brides!!
