You can fill the form out and then print it, then find a local acceptance agency.  Some post offices do it and you can do it at the clerk of the court - you need a photo which can be done at CVS, walgreens, etc. or some of the acceptance agencies do them, it costs about $10 for the photos.  They say it takes 4-6 weeks to get back.

I did mine on the 19th but gave the wrong copy of my birth certificate - it must be the original or from the dept of health and/or vital statistics.  I mailed that last week and still waiting to hear back.  FI hasn't gotten his done yet (he has a military one so it shouldn't take as long but he is going to expedite it.) I suggest expiditing it for peace of mind.  It costs more - but is better than not having it and not being able to go on your trip.
  • FYI - most places only take cash so bring plenty.

  • Most post offices will do them, or city halls. You have to have cash or certified check when you pay for it. I got mine at the end of October and had it delivered at my house the next week, with out the rush on it. From what I've heard average lenght of time is 4-6 weeks to get them back. But pre-fill out the application, just don't sign it, you have to sign it in person.

    Good luck!

  • They take regular checks at the post office, they don't need to be certified checks.  If this is your first passport, you'll write two checks - one to the post office for $25 (processing fee), and a second check for $110 for the passport itself.  If you expedite the passport, it's an additional $60.

Now is apparently a great time to apply for one - my FI applied on Jan. 14th and his passport got here on the 23rd.  He didn't pay for it to be expedited.

  • You won't necessarily need checks.  We brought cash to the post office and they just did the money orders there for us....I found it easier than waiting for a check to cash.  They were very helpful at the post office in taking our pics, taking care of payments and processing it for us.  The only thing I would do is download the forms needed first and bring them already filled out.  Once it was all said and done, it took less than 3 wks for us to get them in the mail :) Good luck!

  • You don't need a passport.

As long as your cruise starts and ends at the same port (i.e. if you leave from Miami and return to Miami) you do NOT need a passport.  I have two guests cruising on my wedding cruise that do not have passports.  I have called and confirmed this with RCI.  I also sailed once on CCL without a passport (I forgot it!).  Didn't have a problem.

You do need an OFFICIAL birth certificate (NOT a copy, needs to have a raised seal and not say "copy" on it anywhere) and a state issued driver's license or ID.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

  • If you do need somethig for a cruise. Find out if you can purchase the passport card instead of the passport book. It's cheaper and works for cruises. But any local post office can help you out :) bring 2 checks with you. They will give you the exact amounts of what to make them out for. Or bring money orders/cash. Have fun on your cruise :) !!!!
