Lets talk Spray Tans and/or tan lotions

I haven't had one in the better part of a decade but I remember then being very....orange. I'm hoping maybe they've made advancements in the last ten years and they're a little more subtle nowdays? Has anyone gotten one recently or know someone that has gotten one? I'm also wondering if they have different levels or settings of tan if I just want a little color and not a full on bake?

I'm considering getting one before I go to Vegas next week since I am so pale that I'm actually clear. But not in that cool Nicole Kidman way, more like a "I haven't seen the sun in twelve years" kinda pale.

So what does everyone think? Yay? Nay? Only good if one wants to look like a cheeto?

never done one.... but fake tans, even teh best ones, always look like, well, fake tans, especialy when you live in a climate where there's no possible way to have gotten a real tan in the middle of winter.

I would say, "Embrace your paleness," but I know exactly how you feel. Never had a spray tan, but had a good experience with the Jergens self-tanning lotion.

Some places have different levels that you can choose from. Planet Beach is one of them (if they have one in your area). I've found that the salons that don't offer levels make me orange, but that's because I'm usually really pale when I go in. I've heard that going into a bed for a few minutes before opens up your pores or something ridiculous, but I haven't tried it. I'm afraid of tanning beds.

I've had better luck with the sunless tanner lotions by Neutrogena. They don't dry my skin out like some of the others do, and I can reapply as often as I need to until I get the color I want. I just feel like I have more control over where it goes.

I've done spray tan a few times, it never turned me orange and I'm extremely pale, and I also intentionally avoid in the sun.

If you're worried about it go to an airbrush artist, they can do it for you they'll have the best color to match your skin tone. however I never had any problem with the coloring of it.

I did it last summer and really liked it. The trick is to really wipe yourself down afterwards to take off the excess and blend with the towel they give you and make sure you put the barrier cream all over your palms and bottom of feet and nails.

Mine only lasted like 4 days. Oh and you can not shower for 4 hours or so after so make sure you go at a time when you dont have somewhere to be right after. Worse thing could happen, you get a little orange in spots (i had trouble with my wrists and ankles cause I did not wipe hard enough) and just get some exfoliating scrub and a loofah and it will fade.

I like the jergens stuff too, its just so time consuming. Plus, the face stuff breaks my face out.

I want a tan, but I want to be incrediably lazy about it.

Ah, well in that case I would go with the spray tan with the levels, and go for a lower level.

I think Mandy said she got a spray tan for her wedding and I was surprised- her color looks really natural and awesome in her pics.

AF, how quickly does the neutrogena line work? I don't mind doing the creams, I just hate how the jergens stuff I have to apply every single day for at LEAST a full week to see some results. If Neutrogenas was a little quicker, I could be up for it.

The thing I do like about the creams vs spray tan is that I can keep the tan going that way, where as with a spray I will just magically not be tanned anymore halfway through my trip, which will look...odd.

The Jergens lotion is AWESOME and is very subtle. I use it every year to help keep my skin an even color. It never turns my skin orange or streaky.... however make sure you wash your hands REALLY well after you apply the lotion - it will start to turn your hands orange after a while, if you're not careful.

I notice it after just one application, but it says you can apply multiple days in a row to get the color you want. I normally just want a little bit of a healthy color, so once is usually good for me.

My skin tone is such that no fake tan, spray, lotion or otherwise, looks right. Can you go get sprayed in a covered spot (ass cheek?) to see what it looks like on your skin, and then go back and do full on if it works for you?

... assuming you'll keep your ass covered in Vegas, that is.

I just recently picked up L'oreal Sublime Bronze gradual tanning lotion and I love it so far. The lotion itself has a hint of color and I noticed a difference in just a few applications.

I spray tan all the time and have been for years. I also have worked at a salon that does it for a long time on the side. I'm also very pale and it has never turned me orange. I like the Mystic Spray tan booths where you can pick from levels 1, 2, and 3. I would say practice with a level one first since people tend to get very nervous about spray tanning. It's nothing to be nervous about and what a lot of people don't know is that it can be eaSily manipulated with a wash cloth in the shower (or loofah which someone stated before) if you think it doesn't blend well around your wrists or ankles.

Remember to do all your shaving and exfoliating first and don't moisturize on the day you plan on spray tanning. Another little trick is when you turn around to be spayed on your backside is to bend your knees. This keeps you from getting non sprayed, white pale lines under your bum crevice. You won't want these if you are wearing a bathing suit on your honeymoon

I feel your paleness pain.

I've done airbrush tanning before (where someone at the salon uses a little airbrush gun to spray you versus a machine). It looked decent for the first few days, and then started flaking off. I looked scaley almost.

Not sure what I did wrong as I did everything like the salon told me to.

Maybe someone here can give some pointers on how to avoid that?

I like the Jergens stuff too, but I have the same break out problems OP mentioned.

After you get airbrushed or you spray tan moisturize as much as possible. It can seem like a PITA but moisturizing twice daily with a really thick lotion will stop the it from flaking and it will fade in a natural way. HTH

If you want something that tans you faster, I'd go for a tanner that has bronzer in it so you can see where it goes for one, and two, the color develops faster.

Thanks! I was moisturizing but probably using cheap lotion. I was planning on giving it a try again this summer, and I'll definitely invest in some thicker, better lotion.

I have spray tanned a few times. One time through the machine and it was streaky and gross.

Twice I went to a studio with a person who sprays you down with a gun. Awesome results. It faded evenly and they make it so your hands and feet blend without being orange and streaky. The place I go will also touch up your face for free up until 2 weeks afterwards.

I know I'm late to this, but I've only ever had luck with the B&BW brand of self-tanner lotion. It worked quickly and didn't turn me orange. I also found it lasted for a decent amount of time.
