Are you f*cking kidding me??? (WR!)

My cousin is getting married in June.  On our first anniversary, but I totally don't care.

She's a hot mess.  I feel bad for her because her mom (my crazy aunt who I've mentioned on here before) completely messed her up, but this is what I don't get:

She's got a huge house and is marrying a widower who has 3 kids - 2 in college, 1 in middle school.  She doesn't have any friends (her mom's words, not mine), so her mom (yes, mom) has to throw her a couples shower so that it's not as awkward.  She didn't even have bms until recently, and I told my mom that she doesn't NEED to have one, or a shower, but no one listens to me.

Well, I got their registry info today.  Even though she has a house that's fully stocked and he also has a house, they registered for the most insane things.

Crock pot - $300
Everyday china - $285 each, 2 sets
Cookware - $800
Dyson - $600
Dyson handheld - $219

Holy fuuck.

There are cheaper things on there, but really?  I honestly kinda judge them for registering at all, especially since people always give cash at weddings here, so this is mainly for the shower.

I also don't want to look like a tool when we get them a $40 set of measuring cups and spoons and nothing else since it's FORTY FUCKING DOLLARS.

Sorry, I'm grumpy.

  • Ugh, that sucks.

The other day, a girl in our grad lounge asked if it was customary to give gifts at engagement parties, and after I gave her the "it's certainly not required, but a wedding planning book or a bottle of wine would be lovely" speech, she said she was confused because she got an engagement party invitation with the registry info printed on it.

    *facepalm*

  • W o w.  I would like more information on a $300 crock pot.  And I would return their RSVP with a nice card and a note that says that you're sorry you can't attend but of course she already knows you must decline because that will be your one-year anniversary and you and your DH will be out of town.
  • $300 crockpot?! I just want a $30 one...
    Holy Hell!
  • Nova, I wish.  But I also don't want my relativees to judge us if we give them a crappy gift.  I mean, we like in Arkansas and are having a kid and all, but I don't want to be talked about.  And yes, I wouldn't put it past them.

  • That's one helluva crock pot...

I do love my Dyson though :)
  • How does one even FIND a $300 crock pot? Mine's pretty delux and it was $50. Wow.

  • That crockpot must make Gold Stew. It must.

  • Why do you need a $200 dyson handheld when you're already planning on having a full size dyson?
  • $40 for measuring cups/spoons?? And I thought I splurged when I spent 8 bucks on those snazzy magnetic measuring spoons.

  • Roxy - love the new pic.
$300 crockpot??  wtf - we have a deluxe programmable one that was $100.
They should listen to you, Sucrets.

  • sarah - you bring up another good point.  This cousin also had a HUGE eparty with her last fiance, complete with catered food, servers, and bartenders.  Yes, it was at her house, but still.  And she wore a fancy prom looking dress to it.

Kinda pissed that I gave her $100 back then.

I did send a nice card when she got engaged this time, though.

  • mother fuucker, the link is not being nice.  It's the All-Clad Deluxe Slow Cooker from William Sonoma.

OH!  I forgot the best part.

SHE DOESN'T EAT.  I'm so not kidding, I have never seen her put more than like 3 bites of broccoli and 2 forkfuls of a sweet potato into her mouth.  She works out for like 5 hours a day and probably has 0% body fat.  WHY DO YOU NEED $800 COOKWARE???

  • Get her a catalog and wrap it.  Then she can have everything, but only in picture form!
  • Sookie---that crockpot is $299.95. NOT $300. Big difference. GOSH!

No idea...but someone already bought both for them!

I don't blame anyone for wanting a Dyson, but usually it's the most expensive thing people put on their registries, you know?

Haha! Perhaps it turns stew into gold via osmosis?

That's just nuts. It sounds like she did the scanning all willy nilly thing because she doesn't need anything but feels obligated to pick items. She could have definitely picked better!

My $30 crockpot makes delicious pot roast and ribs, I don't think that one would make it taste $270 worth better!

  • BG - I dunno, they're registered in 3 places and it seems pretty well thought out.

I think we're going to go with the $80 rice cooker from BBB with a 20% off coupon.  But as a wedding/shower present since we're not attending either.  We would have maybe gone to the wedding had I not gotten ku.

  • I mean, I think it's awesome that you can brown stuff on the stove in the same pot and then transfer it to the stove.... But would I put it in my registry? Hell to the no. We have some pricier stuff on there like a stand mixer and a couch, so I'm not innocent, but something about that is just ridiculous. I bet it's almost exactly the same as the $50 one.

I think it's interesting how so many people feel like they HAVE to have top-of-the-line, chef-quality cookware. Unless you're a gourmet foodie, you probably won't even be able to tell the difference from a mid-line product.
  • >>She works out for like 5 hours a day and probably has 0% body fat.  WHY DO YOU NEED $800 COOKWARE???

She needs $800 cookware for the same reason that she starves herself and works out constantly:  for show.

Oh, well then in that case she's crazy. And greedy. I think the discounted rice cooker is a perfect twofer gift. I wonder if there's a setting for 5 forkfuls?

I just read the reviews on the crock pot, and the first several are terrible. Fail.

ETA: Almost all the reviews said that it broke and the nonstick coating bubbled off. One person had to pay $150 to get it fixed. So, it might end up biting her in the butt!
  • I had a similar reaction when I saw one of my friends' registries. There was a cappuccino machine and $300 pasta making set on it, among other things. I can't imagine her rolling pasta. At all. Ever.

  • Oh, I definitely understand wanting a Dyson but if I was asking for a $600 Dyson I'd probably just want a cheapy handhelf if at all.

    I wish I had a ton of money :(
