...going out to drink!!! What would you recommend, ladies?
***Update*** In case you ladies are curious...
Last night, I had a lot of fun. I had a buzz and it was pretty cool. I drank sex on the beach and a strawberry margarita, then I tried a little of what everyone else was drinking:
Sangria
Jamaican Rum, something like that.
Vodka and cranberry juice
Bourbon (that was gross)
I think that was it. We went to a Mexican bar/restaurant so I ate something and after I had a buzz my boss told me to drink my whole glass of water...the buzz went away. So at least I didn't wake up with a headache or anything.
Thanks so much for the advice. I'm going to an actual bar on Saturday (I think we might go bar hopping) with other friends so I'll be sure to use some other of the recommendations!!

Also, don't be afraid to ask for something fruity. A lot of people around here (college town, so it comes up a lot) will tell the bartender, "This is my first time drinking. What's easy/fruity?" The bartender at the bar down the street makes something that tastes like a candy necklace just for such occasions :P
I'm also a fan of chocolate martinis. Mmmm.
Edit: Oh! Malibu rum and coke! Very easy. I could drink Malibu completely by itself, it's that good (and I'm a wimp with alcohol).
And if you like sour things go for a Midori Sour.
Skyy lemon and sprite is great for liquor noobs.
[QUOTE]You've never had a drink before or you've never had a drink at a bar? My fave is vodka tonic with lemon (not overly sweet). Cate's idea is good too! Let me also recommend sex on the beach.

I've never been to a bar before and I'm going this Saturday!!! (Today's my 21st birthday.)
Wow...these all sound soooo good. I'm taking notes!

Happy birthday! If you bring that up with the bartenders they may give you free drinks :P Just be careful. Kneeling to the porcelain throne for a few hours while repeatedly asking your BF, "Am I dying? I think I'm dying" is no fun.
...not that I have any personal experience with that or anything

Zipis- I love love love chocolate martinis too!
That said, anything with Bailey's Irish Creme is good. Bailey's by itself is fantastic, really.

Ah! I thought you were asking what we'd recommend for a first drink ever! My current favorite drink is an Opulent Sugar Daddy. It involves pineapple-infused vodka and sweet & sour, and there's sugar on the rim. (I'm such a girl!) I like Sex on the Beach, too. Can't go wrong with a Cuervo margarita, either. Big fan of martinis as well, fruit-flavored and not.

Things to avoid:
Cheap vodka
Cheap... anything - it'll hurt more going down
Too sweet - more likely to puke
Shots
Those are all a quick way to kill the night for your 21st!
Stoli has a bunch of flavored vodkas - you can have them mixed with any fruit juice (pineapple, orange, cranberry, sometimes apple) or soda (sprite, gingerale, 7Up are usually the best options with vodka). That's really not a bad way to go for your first drinks - they're fruity, not too strong. Sip 'em slow so you don't end up clutching the porcelin toilet, as zips pointed out. They're not too expensive, but they won't burn like cheaper vodka.
I don't like Coke or Pepsi, but those with rum is usually very good, I'm told. It's another "beginners drink".
Also, if you start feeling the effects, switch to water. Alternate water and drinks for the rest of the night if you choose to keep drinking. And be sure to have a glass or two of water before you go to sleep - it'll help prevent a hangover, which is mostly caused by dehydration.

Long Island Iced Teas. Especially more than one. I don't care how delicious they may seem, or if you think you're OK. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200
...unless you like being that drunk chick sitting on the sidewalk propped against a building who can't stop explaining what's going on to every passerby and getting free oranges and chocolate bars from other drunk people.
...again. No personal experience here <_<
It's a sweet drink and not bad in the morning if you take it easy. Enjoy your Birthday
This weekend might be a little bit too much fun! There is so much to try. I might go out more than I expected!
@Cate: Thanks. I will definitely avoid those drinks!
@Zipis: lol...I don't want to puke. I think I'm going to take it slow for my first couple of outings!
Chocolate martinis sound very interesting...
What exactly is sex on the beach? I've heard about this drink forever...

Don't ask... just order. You won't regret it!
(Disclaimer: Unless you're allergic to certain fruits, in which case I'd ask your bartender to avoid those in your drinks.)

Grrrr... haha, that's okay, I half assumed someone would be typing at the same time as me anyway!
I actually didn't puke on my 21st birthday. I was studying abroad in China, and talked a bar owner (who was friends with my boss at the place I was interning) into reserving the whole lounge for my friends, give them all drink specials, and give me free drinks all night (I didn't want to drink whatever crappy drink my friends handed me). Because it was the 2nd to last night of my program and everyone was done with finals, EVERYONE wanted to party! So my 21st birthday consisted of 81 people in a swanky lounge in downtown Shanghai. I was definitely wasted, but I was nowhere near puking. It was perfect!
Oh, and we started out the night at the 3rd tallest building in the world (now the 4th? or 5th?) and some South African businessmen bought me Cristal champagne as a birthday gift. Freaking AMAZING birthday! Woot woot!

I've never tried one (though it's on my list), but it seems pretty easy. I'm not a big fan of vodka, but when mixed right it's pretty good.
And this is the recipe BF uses when he makes me chocolate martinis:

It's fantastic. And now I want one.
I never wanted to puke either, but unfortunately I was a slow learner when it came to my limits. Also, once I get buzzed enough, if you put a drink in front of me I'm going to drink it even if I think it's disgusting (and I'll comment on how nasty it is the whole time!). Some of my friends think this is hilarious and take advantage of it. Hopefully your friends are nicer than mine :P
So definitely try to take it a bit slow! As much fun as stories are later, making those stories kinda sucks

Wow, that DOES sound like an awesome birthday!! Very jealous!

My 21st birthday was on a Sunday, so we went out at midnight on Saturday (technically Sunday, so I was allowed in). Before the epic shot of Goldschlagger we had done a power hour and had several margaritas at home. . . after the shot, we went to another bar in town where they give you a free "birthday mug" that you can get refilled all night with whatever beer you want. I puked at the bar My friends took me home and I was in bed by 1:30. It was fun, but I paid for it the next day. LOL

My birthday is usually during finals, so people either come to my party to celebrate the end or for a much needed study break!
