Getting in Shape

30 pounds in 6 months

During my last year of college I gained 20 pounds and in the years following an extra 10.  I have 6 months until my wedding and want to lose all 30 pounds.  I'm buying an elliptical and free weights to start working out in early September for my March wedding.  Has anyone been successful in losing this amount of weight in this time period?  Any suggestions?

Re: 30 pounds in 6 months

  • Yes. I lost almost 40 lbs in 6 months on Weight Watchers. It's a fantastic program. I highly recommend it.
  • It sounds like we are in the same boat!  I have about 35 lbs to lose (I also gained in college and after) and would like to do it in about 6-8 months.  I have a year until my wedding but would like to be comfortably in the "maintain" stage of weight loss by then.  Good Luck!

  • I just lost 30 pounds in about 7 months, so yeah, I think you can definitely do it with a combination of diet and exercise (cardio AND weight training).

  • You can do it- just don't know why you are waiting until early September to start? Get out and start today. Even if it's a walk around the block, you shouldn't procrastinate beginning.

  • It is definitely doable. I'm getting married in March as well and joined the gym at the beginning of July and have lost about 8 pounds so far with 7 months to go. I changed the way I eat and have been going to the gym 3 or 4 times a week for cardio and weight training and I haven't felt better.

  • I'm in the same boat. My goal is to lose 50 pounds in 7 1/2 months.  I've got a treadmill and free weights at home, but have been having back problems, so it's hard to do it sometimes.  I've also been with WW for about 3 months, but could probably be doing better with it than I am.  It's crunch time now, so I'm recommitting myself to it starting on Saturday.

    Good luck to everyone!
  • I’m getting married October 2nd.  After the New Year I made some small adjustments that have clearly made a huge difference.   I’m lost about 20 lbs since January.  I basically just stopped drinking in the afternoon coke and from January till May I didn’t eat any dessert after any meals (not even a small piece of candy).  I’m sure I cheated once or twice, but I cut out a lot of my typical indulgence.  Besides that I wasn’t making any major alterations.  I eat pretty well during the week.  (a half English muffin with light peanut butter, small wheat turkey wrap with just turkey and 2 slices of cheese and mixed up dinners at home)  My FI loves Pizza and burgers and everything that I can’t eat everyday – so sometimes I could have him grill extra chicken and throw it on a salad instead of that pizza. I also do boxing and kickboxing just a few times a week- usually 2 or 3… but sometimes only once.  Honestly, it really was just those minor changes above.  I was never great on the weekends (sometimes eating that pizza or taco bell).  ßIf you can you beat me there, or exercise a little more than I mentioned… I’m sure you could cut 30lbs in 6 months no problem!!  If you’ve never tried boxing, give it a try.  The workouts are incredible and usually burn up to 1,000 calories during an hour class.  They are also fun.  *If you live near one – try LA Boxing. Good luck! -Lindsay

  • Yes it is definately possible.  I am getting married in 10 days and started watching what I was eating in February and to date I have lost 30 lbs.  I am a busy mom of 3 kids ages 7, 13 and 15 and I run here and there every evening of the week.  I went on Atkins and watched the bad carbs that I was intaking, and about 3 months ago I started on Herbalife.  I feel fantastic, I have tons of energy and I feel like a million bucks.  I have cheated quite a bit, being on holidays and camping and all.

When I started on my dieting and exercising I went dress shopping, phobably not the smartest thing to do know, however, to make a long story short, the company I bought it from went bankrupt and I was stuck having to buy a new dress 2 and a half months away.  The First dress I bought was a size 18 well low and behold, 4 months later the dress that I bought ended up being a size 14.

    Good Luck Janet
  • It's definitely doable to lose 5lbs a month. I also have a home elliptical. This is what I do:
Week 1: Started at 4 days a week on the elliptical (easiest resistances to get myself used to it) for 30min. Used weights on the off days for 20min

Week 2: the same thing, but amped up my resistance 1 level. The work out was noticeably tougher.

Week 3: Added an extra day of elliptical training to make it 5 days a week at 35min.

Week 4: Stayed at 5 days a week, upped it to 40-45min (whatever I could stand). Don't forget your weights and strength training! Try doing it Mon-wed-fri for 20min sessions.

Just keep slowly upping the resistance after that. I wouldn't advise going above 45min on it though. Not unless you're hardcore training for a marathon or something. I watched TV while on mine, so the time flew by just like that!

  • I think a great tool is The Daily Plate on Livestrong.  You can track what you eat and it will count the calories, etc. for you.  I find it helpful to make sure I am staying on track.  Good luck!  : )

  • Start exercising today, and choose a workout that you love!  I go to Jazzercise classes - sounds silly, but it's the best workout I've ever done and it's actually fun.  I lost 30 pounds doing a combination of Jazzercise and the South Beach Diet.  It took me 4 months, and I've maintained my new weight for the past 3 months.  You can do it!!
  • I'm currently 7 week til my wedding and have been at the gym at lot.  I would say if you are not always feeling motivated to really push yourself (like most of us who aren't gym rats) you might want to consider working out with a personal trainer, even just once a week, or at least doing weight and cardio classes at your gym.  If a trainer is too expensive maybe split the training sessions with a girlfriend so you will pay half the price and have a friend there to motivate you.
  • I love running! it's the best high you can get, it's not for everyone  but you could try couch to 5 k it eases you into running, It's a great program. I belive that weight training is crucial for loosing weight. You need to really work your major muscle groups in order to get your metabolism going. Julian Michaels 30 day shred is awesome.

  • I have gained a lot of weight over the past couple of years.  I went from a size 4 to a size 12, so I can relate to wanting to lose extra weight.  I started to count calories and just walk my dogs as exercise.  I used myfooddiary.com as the tool to count my calories - it costs 9 dollars a month and it is really worth it.  I lost 10 lbs in 3 weeks.  The first couple of days are the hardest, but once you get in the routine it becomes habit.  I do cheat once a week, otherwise I would go crazy.

  • Buy this month's issue of SELF magazine (it has Beyonce on it) it has some great pull-out cards for weight-training.  It is basically all of the excercises that my PT at Fitness Together is doig with me now.  I bought it so I can do all of the stuff alone when my paid sessions are done :)

  • It's all about consistency.  The hardest thing is breaking old habits and starting new ones, so start "practicing" now :)  I lost 10lbs. in 6 weeks just from quitting soda.  It was a really easy and gratifying thing to do to get me motivated to lose more.  Good luck!
  • I was down 1 dress size in a month, just watching what i ate, had smaller portions and stopped eating at work.  (i work part time in a kitchen)  i went to the gym 2-3 times a week when i could between work and i have two little children, i want to get to a size 8 and just slipped into a 12.  i havent weighed myself yet but i am so excited that its actually working.  i do 15 min of elliptical, 15 min on the sit down bike and weight training.
  • Easiest weight loss trick- get your wisdom teeth out haha. I'm going to start that diet in two weeks... :(

  • definitely do-able. i lost 35 lbs in about 4 months, the number one thing i recommend is cut out any sugary foods, substitute snacks with fruits and vegitables, and eat a high protein, high energy breakfast, that'll kick start your metabolism for the whole day.

i lost it about 2 years ago, and gained 10 back. for the last month i've been on alli and slimfast, and have already lost 3-4 lbs.

  • Lose the carbs and eat loads of pure protien.  ie eggs, chicken breast, protien powder.  eat less than 300 calories 5 to 6 times a day about every 2-3 hours.  works miracles.  take vitamins and emergen-c to supplement nutrients.

  • I am very luck my FI is an Exercise Physiologist. I am trying to loose about 15 pounds before the big day so he actually creates a workout plan and eating plan for me. You may know this already but this is some advice that he gives to me when I wourkout, Never do the same exercise again and again and again. Your body will actually stop loosing weight wants it becomes used the same exercise.  So what I would do is make a 2 week wokout program for yourself doing different wourkouts to help tone and loose the weight. And that way your body will react differently and you will see more results. The key is energy... Good luck

  • Go low-carb or glycemic index.  I lost 25 lbs in just a few months without exercise, and that was almost a year ago.  By limiting sugars, pasta, beer, bread, etc, your body will burn through it's fat reserves effortlessly.  Good luck!
  • I agree with Katnip21f
all of that helped me. I was 216 after I had my daughter. I am now 175. Working on the rest --hopefully will be at 150 soon. It takes times, patience and perserverance.
  • I wish you the best of luck! I just started my diet for the big day. I am hoping to lose 40-50, but I have 10 months! I signed up for a 5K run/walk in October to keep me motivated and am signing up for a personal trainer at my school's gym!
  • The most INCREDIBLE workout and nutrition regimen that really works is called P90X.  My fh lost 40 lbs and built a lot of muscle in 90 days!!  The workouts are intense, but the goal is to push yourself as far as you can. The nutrition plan is in three different plans and has three parts to it.  It may cost a bit of money, but it is so totally worth it!!  I have not been super committed to following it, and I have lost 15 lbs in a little more then 1 month.

    P90X REALLY IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • YES!!!  It is not that bad...only 5 lbs a month if you look at it that way.  Very safe, very reasonable.  Don't do any fad diets or crazy things.  I started training for a sprint distance triathlon.  I HATE running.  People always look like they are in so much pain.... I started slow.  Walked 5 minutes, jogged for 1, walked four minutes jogged 1.5 minutes....then built from there.  Add in just a little yoga, maybe even just walk with some ankle wts on because although muscle weighs more than fat, it takes up less room AND burns calories long after you stop working out!!!
Since I moved in with my fiance the end of March, I have lost 29 lbs, 2, almost 3 (depends on label) pant sizes, feel great and I wore a bikini to the public pool/slides this weekend!!!
You CAN do it!  Just do it right so it stays off for good!!
