My face hates me

I've been breaking out like a mother the last couple of days.  Of course, they are all in highly noticable areas (corner of my mouth, down onto my chin) so I get to go into my interview looking like a 16 year old girl.  Thanks skin.  Thanks.

Please tell me that some other almost-31-year-old is having issues too?

Re: My face hates me

  • Yeah, my face hates me too.  Well you saw it.
  • I think its just you.

No, I really don't have many skin issues :::knocks on wood::::

Did you start using a new product? Sometimes the changes in the seasons makes my face get really dry and flaky, but not usually breakouts unless it is summer and I am outside & sweating a lot.
  • I've always had issues, on & off.  Try being older than you are & looking for products that fight acne & wrinkes!

    Actually, I didn't. :)

Missy, I've had problems forever.  Not once since I started breaking out as a teen, have I ever NOT had a pimple.  Ever.  I don't know if it's extra bad right now because I've been outside so much with scarfs around my face, or just the change in temp or what... That's really the only thing that's changed for me.
  • Did you go off BCP?  That's when mine really got bad, my Dr just put me back on and it's improved.
  • I went off a few months ago.  But it never got any better while I was on, so I don't see the point of doing that again.
  • ::Raises hand::
  • Do you think I can just get a face transplant? ;)
  • My dr gave me antibiotic liquid to put on and it has helped, along with the pill.
  • LTB, I had one of those the day of the wedding. Awe.Some.

N, I'm not really sure what the process would be here for me to get something like that.  I don't know if I'd have to try to wend my way through the doctors or if I'll have to go outside the system to a dermatologist.
  • Amoro- What is your skin care routine like now? I was on Accutane in hs and still got zits all through college. In the last two years I changed a few small things and my skin has gotten a toooooon better.

I use a Clarisonic with Cetaphil face wash. In the summer I will occasionally use an exfoliating scrub w/ the Clarisonic bc my skin just feels gross in the summer. In the winter I stick to just the Cetaphil. The only moisturizer I use is Clinique Dramatically Different Moitsturizing gel. Its wonderful and doesn't ever make me break out. I use it when my skin is clear and when it is acting up and it works awesome in both conditions.

Secondly, I switched from liquid makeup to Bare Minerals. I know a lot of people say it isn't worth the money, but it has helped a TON. It took a few months before I saw that it was actually helping my skin, I originally started using it bc it was comfortable and provided good coverage.

Other than that, try to change your pillowcases as often as you can and maybe try using a separate towel/ washcloth just for washing your face. Sometimes body products that you use in the shower can make you break out .

While any acne sucks, the adult kind is just cruel. I have gotten ridiculously obsessed w sticking to my skin care routine, because if I don't, its bad. Good luck!!

  • Ughhh I'm 24 and my skin is always breaking out.  I was on a strict Proactiv regime but I think I need to go to the derm and get something stronger :(

  • I'm 30.  Over Thanksgiving, I had such a blind pimple that it caused me to have a swollen lymph node and to be put on antibiotics.

    WTF.
  • Try Mary Kay's "Velocity" cleanser and moisturizer.  I just started using it and it is wonderful.  Also, for some reason, the more effort I make to keep my hands away from my chin (resting head on chin) or lower cheeks (same thing), I have found that my "obsessing" about not touching has helped to keep the breakouts down.  I still get blackheads, but not the pimples like I used to.

Also, you could try an exfoliating wash every other day-- the St. Ives exfoliating wash is pretty inexpensive and the scrub you get is pretty good.  You'll want to follow with a non-greasy moisturizer after exfoliating though -- otherwise your skin might start getting rough and peeling (talking from experience here).  My FI has acne sometimes and he has switched to using JUST the St. Ives and he loves it. His skin is much smoother and the breakouts are almost nonexistent now.

  • Right now, I use Olay Regenerist cleanser in the AM, and PM if I haven't worn any makeup.  If I've worn makeup, then I use a L'Oreal makeup removing cleanser, and a slightly heavier moisturizer.

I did try Bare Minerals and I'm one of the lucky few who is allergic to it.  I did like the coverage and the way my skin looked, but after about 3 months, I started getting really small, red bumps all over my skin, and harder, under skin pustules that were really painful.  No BM for me!!

The Clinique Dramatically Different stuff was just too oily for me.  I've tried it. :(  I've pretty much been through everythign out there.

Anyone use a blackhead extractor?  I'm thinking of getting one.

I hate Mary Kay stuff.  :(  Been through them too.  Plus, I live overseas now.

St. Ives scrub is actually really bad for your skin because it can shred your pores.  Doesn't mean I haven't used it though! ;D
  • Yeah, I am not a fan of MK stuff either. SIL sells it, but thankfully she has never been too pushy to get me to buy some.

That definitely stinks, Amoro. It sounds like you have tried a lot already. I had zits when I was a teen, and then they got a whole heck of a lot better. I usually use Biore facewash and astringent. Exfoliate with microdermabrasion once a week and use a deep pore mask once a week or so. That usually works for me.

Yes, I get the occassional zit that is painful, which is still a pita, but not a lot at one time. I had them all on my forehead this past summer when we were outside all of the time with the kids. I hated it, but I guess its the price of being a teacher in GA.
  • I have... 8 painful zits right now.  8.  3 at the corner of my mouth, one next to my nose... gah.  So frustrating.

I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm just knocking all of your suggestions aside- I don't want to do a shoegal.  :(  Yes, I'm allergic to the titanium dioxide in it.  Liquid foundation doesn't bother me as much as long as it's under 15, but that stuff was terrible.  I can't wear sunscreen on my face at all and have to steer clear of chapstick with spf.

Dang, it sounds like you have super sensitive skin. I know there are a lot of all natural beauty products out there. Perhaps you could find some relief with them. I am trying to think of some of the names...
  • Sorry, it's not the titanium, it's this: Bismuth oxychloride.  My skin would start itching while I had the makeup on.
  • What about Arbonne products? That is one of the ones I was thinking of.
  • You know what's really funny?  Those are pretty much the only things I've come across that make my skin unhappy.  Everything else is fine.  I'll take a look at Arbonne. :)
  • Grrr....painful breakouts are the worst.  Especially by the mouth :/  Can you dab some toothpaste on them to dry them out?  I have luck with that sometimes.

    I am minty-smelling as we speak. :D

Dude, Missy, do you know how much that Arbonne stuff is?! Holy cow!
  • edited December 2010

I'm almost 28, but yes, exactly the same issue (and similar timing- just after my interviews!). I think it is a combination of stress, the humidity (this one obviously wouldn't apply for you!) and the fact that I've been leaning on my hand a lot (thus the chin breakouts).

Oh, random 'tip': I left my face wash on one of my trips and had to go without it for the rest of the trip.... my skin ended up looking so much better from using just hot water and a face washer twice a day (and moisturiser) than it did when I was washing it with proper facewash... Since then, I've very rarely used anything bar water on my face and my skin has been better than it's ever been. Come to think of it- I used an exfoliating face wash twice earlier this week (after exercising- I felt the need to be extra clean)... I wonder if that has something to do with my current breakout? Hmm.

I know the idea of using nothing bar water on oily greasy breakout prone skin sounds ridiculous- I wouldn't have believed it could make my skin better unless I had (accidentally) tried it for myself.

  • Have you ever tried Burt's Bees? The tomato wash is actually great. The shipping charges might blow though...
  • Hmm... I hear tomato is good.  I was just reading a home remedy for lemon juice and tomato

Yeah, I know it is expensive. One of the Mom's of a kid in a class of mine a while back sold it. Thankfully she never pressured me into buying any. I did get a nice little shower scrub and lotion set for my Christmas present though.
  • ha... that's good!  But waaaay too expensive for me. Way. :)
  • I totally hear ya. There is another one I was thinking off despite not being able to remember the name right now. If I think of it later, I will let you know.
