How long does it take to get your driver's license?

Like, in the mail. I know how long I have to wait to get my name changed; it is 2 1/2 hours at the DPS. I went probably 3 weeks ago, and I don't have anything yet. My Social Security card came pretty quickly. I am afraid that my new license is lost and someone is getting into clubs using a card with a horrible picture of me on it.

  • i'm not sure since I got my license the same day, but 3 weeks seems awfully long to me.  I'd look into it.
  • Yeah I've always gotten it the same day.

  • I got mine in 5 days. We ordered Dh's on May 15th and it's still not here. Yeah..DMV swears they mailed it out and it should arrive in a few days.
  • I've moved to different states twice and gotten my name changed and always got it the same day.  They take the old one!

Even when I was 16, I got a paper license to use in the meantime.

  • It took about a week, and I got to keep the old one (with a hole punched in it).  It's nice to have both during the transition to prove either name.

  • I've always got mine the same day. When I changed my name I walked in they took my picture, and handed it to me 5 minutes later. I dont know about this mail stuff.

Is this a state to state thing?

  • Yeah, it's a state-by-state thing.  In WI, they print it on the spot.  Here in MN, you have to wait for it to be printed and mailed (I think it's because we have these crazy flexible cards.)  It usually takes mine about 2-3 weeks.

I'd just call your DMV to check on it?

I miss those crazy flexible cards...  Kind of sad when I had to swap the MN for the WI.

  • One of my friends brought a MN license to a VA bar and they wouldn't accept it as valid because it was so bendy!

Yeah VA started doing these super duper hard to replicate id's. It has special scan bars, watermarks, and a see through image of my face. You are also not allowed to smile at all so all of the pics look like mug shots. Except for mine, which is a smirk because I got it after I perfected the wedding smile but then was told not so smile so I was trying not to laugh.
  • J just had to get a new license because he got a new qualification on his for being able to drive a straight truck (or a semi with no trailer). They gave him the paper and punched the hole in his license, and I think it took 2 weeks or so to come in. The envelope is VERY unnoticeable; nothing marks it as being from the DMV or anything like that (at least here in Iowa). I would say it should come any day now.

I lucked out - they were still issuing them on site when I changed my name, so I got mine instantly.

I don't know if your local DMV can tell you when it was mailed out, but they may be able to look it up for you.

And yeah, we're now in the no-smile category. Boo. Of course, that's easy for him...

  • You can't call the DPS here. It just rings and rings. So you go in and stand in line for a number before you can even ask a question. It may be a State of Texas thing. I have my old license and a paper copy with photo and everything of my new one. I figure that they have mostly houseplants working there, so this is why it's taking so long.

  • That's quite possible.

I always go to the office in the county we live in, instead of one closer to work, because there's hardly ever a line. And, those folks are pretty decent.

I didn't realize you were in TX/Houston, so that could also add to the length of time. I don't think either of my parents have had theirs redone recently; otherwise, I'd ask how long it took to get theirs (they're in DFW area).

  • When I changed my name after divorce in Houston, they gave me a temporary paper one and it took several weeks for the new one to arrive.  Wait another week before you worry too much.
