Peonies

I was thinking about having peonies as the main flower, but I have only seen them in white and shades of pink.  Do they come in oranges or corals? My wedding is in July 2011 in Indiana.  Will they be in season then?

White, ivory, and pink I believe.  They're actually spring flowers, but sometimes you can get them later through summer (especially from over seas).  But, this year they bloomed two weeks early and some brides are having to to use back up flowers right now.

there are some that are a coral color, but you pay way more for them because of the unusual color.

You're also going to pay a sky high price in July.  They're expensive even when they are in season locally.

Peonies come in MANY colors, including orangey tones and coral.  'Coral Charm' is a popular variety of coral colored peony.  They won't be available locally in season, but a good florist may be able to import them from another country. The price will likely be much higher to import, however it may not be astronomical.  My florist imported peonies from New Zealand and I really didn't think the price was crazy.

You may also want to look into peony tulips, cabbage/garden roses, and ranunculus flowers as less expensive peony alternatives.

I'm getting married in Indiana in June, 2011.  I want pink peonies for my bouquet.  My florist said that right now peonies are pretty much done.  She said that even if you can get peonies when they're not in season they may not look good.  You may want to consider garden roses as an alternative. :)

CJ - If you are worried about price why not use them in your bouquet and as FH's bout. Use similar colored and cheaper flowers in the BM bouquets and other bouts. Everything will still match and you will get your peonies but for a cheaper price.

I'm a July bride in Michigan, and I really wanted peonies, but was discouraged by all the reasons people listed above.

Check out garden roses (pics in my bio under ideas & inspiration).  They look very similar!  They're not as big, but have the same soft look.  They're still not cheap as flowers go (I think mine are $5/stem), but in July, they're probably you're best bet.  And they come in just about any color!

    cmkuno:

i checked out your site and i couldn't believe how similar our tastes are.  since my wedding is still 13 months (to the day, but who's counting?) away, i haven't actually put into motion a lot of my plans.

i also am designing a similar themed invitation set from watercolor paintings i did and scanned in and will be using vistaprint for my save-the-dates and invitations.  good DIYing!!!
