It depends on the condition of the pieces. It's hard to tell from the pictures because of the lighting and all of the stuff on them.

Unseen, I'd say offer $250 and see where that goes with the stipulation that you may want to renegotiate if there's any visible scratches or something.

20k miles isn't a lot for a used a car. Personally, I'd go for the better mileage.

</div><div>What is your commute like? If its pretty short and won't make a large difference with the MPG and you're looking for more room, it may be good for you to get a newer car. On the other hand, if it is going to be a substantial difference, I think you should go with the Honda. Honda's often have good reviews for being reliable for a long time with regular maintenance so that is something I would research also.

For sure. I miss my Honda. It had over 200,000 miles when I traded it in last year, and probably would have kept going.

ETA: the trade in value was about $4000, which blew my mind.

Edie, one of our department cars is an Escape. I freaking love that thing. It drives really easily and has a lot of space, but doens't drive like it's huge. If that one has the warrenty still, I'd do it. Find out if it's a hybrid. Our work one only gets driven in the city (campus, which is worse), and gets pretty good gas mileage... like 26mpg.

Honestly, the Accords don't get that good of mileage anyway for a sedan. And they can be pricey to fix.

Hondas last forever and it's not like gas is going to suddenly be super cheap. If you maintain your car there's no reason you wouldn't be able to get at least 175k miles out of it.

Tim had an old Chevy Blazer with 220k miles on it. He gave it to a friend of his a few months ago and now he's driving it.

I have a Honda hybrid. I've had it for about 4 years. I get over 40 miles to the gallon and have yet to have any problems with it. I plan on driving it until the wheels fall off.

ETA: It's a Civic, if that makes a difference.

Oh, I should add. My dad bought a Honda Accord brand new in 1998. My brother is still driving that thing, with 270,000 miles on it. The transmission is a little... picky

and he's had to do some work on it (duh). But it's still running. I just know that the few parts he's had to replace were pricey.

Edi: I bought a 2012 Honda Civic LX sedan last October and I love it. I drive a lot...and it does get excellent miles per gallon. It is nice and roomy and the trunk is deccent.

Edie, you are doing a lot of research on this purchase, that is great. I plan on getting a new car sometime this summer after the wedding. I would like something like a small suv but then I realize that the only one riding in it is me and FI and occasionally the dog. When I look at it that way it really doesn't make sense to get anything big.

I have a Fusion now... it's almost 5 years old with 50,000 miles and I have done NOTHING to it except oil changes. The warrenty is good until 60,000 miles so I'm trying to find an excuse to bring it in before then.

I'm daydreaming about a new car, too. I really really love the Ford Edges (apparently I'm a Ford girl now?) And, sadly, the mpg on those is no worse than mine. I got my Fusion right before the Hybrid option came out, so it gets about 25-26mpg combined (and I commute freeway.)

Edie- FWIW, I had an accord and LOVED it. I have heard one negative review about an Escape. I think with 30 miles each day it would be worth it to do the Honda. My FG's mom has a 2010 and she loves it.

Try looking at http://www.edmunds.com/ too. That's what I used when I bought my Fusion. I went in considering just about anything, any brand. I knew I wanted a full-size sedan and that's it. So I understand being overwhelmed

I like that it usually shows the manufacturer info and has consumer reviews.

Edie, if you are planning on using this car as a family car I would get the escape. My brother had one and I loved driving it so much that I traded in my mustnag for an SUV. I ended up going with a Rav4 just to have something different but I couldn't go back to having a car after being used to the extra space that you get with an SUV.

Y'all wanna hear a sad story? FIL's cat died a while back, so he was looking for a new one. He got a 5 week old blue eyed persian from a breeder (WTF? 5 weeks? anyway). He had it for 2 days when the local priest came over to see why he never came to church. He has never gone to church sine he moved to FL. I think his neighbors tattled on him. Anyway, the priest is portly guy, and he stepped on the kitten. The kitten died the next day. FIL was PISSED at the priest. Seriously, not a good impression to make.

I know, right? I was shocked. That's the last thing he needs. BUT on the upside, now that he doesn't have a cat to take care of, ans he's on disability fro his job, he has no excuse why he can't come visit his grandson and meet him for the first time. We have to buy his tickets, but he's coming in June.
