hotels near Water's Edge in Westbrook

I'm looking at Water's Edge, and slightly concerned about room rates for my guests-- can anyone recommend alternate hotels in close proximity to the resort? From my searches it looks like they're all B&B's or at the level of Super 8's-- not ideal for the impression I'd like my guests to have!
Your suggestions would be appreciated!

I see from you profile that you're an out-of-stater (NJ).  Unfortunately, the CT shoreline doesn't have a luxury name brand hotels like the Hilton (if that is what you were thinking) unless you go way over to Groton/New London area or New Haven (both 1/2 hour from Old Saybrook/Westbrook area)....The Water's Edge is a luxury hotel, but that's why rates are so expensive here.  Inns, B&Bs, or "Super 8's" are pretty much all you are going to find in the shoreline towns close to Water's Edge  (ie. Branford, Guilford, Madison, Clinton, Westbrook, Old Saybrook, Old Lyme - in order West to East along the shore, with Essex north of Old Saybrook/Northeast of Westbrook) because they like to keep their small town charm...

The towns on the shoreline get a book at the beginning of every summer (I live in Madison so I get it too and keep it) that has all the attractions of the shoreline.  This is a list of all the "hotels" you are going to find in those towns.  Good luck!

Out of all the "motel-like" accomidations Econo Lodge and the Comfort Inn seemed the best.  We ended up going w/ the Econo Lodge and the Day Inn.  So we did Water's Edge (part of the package) Econo Lodge (Mid-range) and Days Inn (budget).  We are providing transportation so it was easier going w/ Econo and Days Inn b/c they were closer together.  The Comfort Inn would have been a 30min round trip.

Oh, and all the towns north of the shoreline towns (North Branford, Durham, Killingworth/Haddam, Deep River, Chester) are all woodsy towns, so all you are going to find there are probably Inns and B&B's but the rates might be more reasonable because they are not directly on the shoreline

I am having my wedding at Saybrook Point and I have the same issue as you.  I have decided to block Comfort Inn (it's avging about $65 a night) because it looks the least "shady" out of all of them lol  But it is the furthest away.  I am still going to post other hotel options for guests in case they want to look around for places closer but unfortunately there really isn't much choice.

I got married at Waters Edge in June and you're definitely right.. the room rates were astronomical! The rates were atleast $300 a night with a two night minimum. Although, DH called up and complained and they said anyone who mentions they were there for our wedding could only stay one night which helped..

The only other people who stayed over at Waters Edge was our MOH and our BM. Everyone else stayed at various Comfort Inns and Super 8's in the area. They actually were all pretty nice looking (I dropped off Welcome Boxes at each hotel) and I was pleasantly surprised. I know we had guests stay at the Comfort Inn in Old Saybrook, the Super 8 in Old Saybrook, and the Comfort Inn in Guilford. The Comfort Inns were pretty updated and even smelled nice when we walked in to drop off the boxes.

Thanks everyone for the great tips!

For the Water's Edge brides...just curious how "aggressive" you got over negotiating the room rate. Summerkutie mentioned they released the 2 night minimum-- do you think they would be open to discounting the rate if you told them it was a dealbreaker for booking the wedding?

They give you a 10% discount right off the bat.  It probably depends on what time of year you're getting married.  If it's b/w Memorial Day and Labor Day and on a Saturday you're leverage is small.  If it's in their off season you might have a better chance.  Either way it doesn't hurt to try.

Ditto this... DH made it apparent that we were not happy it all and basically yelled.. "We're spending x amount of money to have our wedding there and you expect our guests to spend at least $600 to spend the night because they have to be there 2 night?! That's ridiculous". He also said if that was the case then absolutely no one would be staying there.
