Minneapolis area photo help from Knotties

Hey Knotties,
I need your expertise. I’m looking for the best place to take photos in the Minneapolis area. This can be wedding or engagement photos. Also, tell me why. Does the place have great lighting? Filled with nature? Modern buildings? What makes it unique to where you live and why would someone want to take wedding-related photos there? I’ll be using your Knot name, btw.
Thanks in advance!

We took our e-pics at the Stone Arch Bridge because it is a beautiful landmark in Minneapolis, somewhat historic, and special to us - where we had our second date and held hands for the first time, where we like to take a summer walk, and where he proposed (on a summer walk!). It has a great blend of history, water, greenery from the riverbanks, and urban flair with the downtown Minneapolis skyline in the background.  It is almost "over used," but it was special to us to have our e-pics there.

More info about the bridge: http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/about/stonearch.asp

I agree on the Stone Arch Bridge!  I also really like downtown Anoka for outdoor pics against their older brick buildings, like Serum's.  Serum's is on a more quiet street so you can get the classic bride/groom/bridal party walking down the center of the street shot at any time of day and there are not too many trees so the natural lighting is great.

We took our e-pics at the University of St. Thomas and the River Parkway at the south end of Summit Ave. The bluffs overlooking the river are gorgeous in summer and fall. You can step out on the rocks and the river valley makes a great backdrop. There are so many trees lining the sidewalk and bike path, it's a natural oasis. The tree-lined median running along Summit is a great place to sneak in between some trees and get some cute shots!

We took some of our e-pics in Rice Park in St. Paul, which is surrounded by the Landmark Center, Ordway, St. Paul Hotel, and James J. Hill library. All of these are recognizable as uniquely a part of downtown St. Paul...especially the Landmark Center and library.  The architecture is unique and beautiful...and it tends to be a quieter area (except weekday lunches), so you can get easy, unobstructed shots.  In addition, the street immediately surrounding that area can be quite quiet, so you can take "walking down the street" pictures without being in the way of cars.

For something fun and truly Minnesotan, we took the rest of our pictures at the State Fair...it doesn't get much more Minnesotan than pictures with hot dish on a stick:)

I'll chime in with the Mill City Museum/Stone Arch Bridge/Saint Anthony Main area (they're all right next to each other).  We had our e-pics done there and the backgrounds were all really different.  We had: brick buildings, parks, old boardwalk, grassy hill, river, cobblestone street, bridges, big stone/concrete buldings, wide windowsills you could climb in, woodsy areas, and of course, the big bridge with the MPLS skyline in the background.  We shot for 3 hours and could have kept going.  (Pics in my bio)

It's been suggested to me that the scuplture garden outside the Walker could be a great area (once the snow has melted, it can really look wonderful).

We haven't had pictures done yet, but we're planning on doing our e-pics at the MN Landscape Arboretum in Chaska.  Great outdoor spaces, lots of different types of gardens and plants, some buildings/brick walls, great bridges, and a wonderful Japanese Garden, where we originally wanted to have our ceremony.  We go out there for dates from time to time, and it's a very special place to us.

For our day-of pictures, we will probably go to Wirth Park in Minneapolis.  Another great outdoor space, with ponds and creeks.  It's the most convenient park-space between our ceremony and reception, so it's our best option right now.

I also like the look of the Stone Arch bridge/Mill City museum area, but I've seen it used so often that I want something different.

We're thinking about doing ours at the Rose and Peace Gardens. It's such a beautiful park with a variety of flowers, ponds, and fountains. Plus it's across the road from Lake Harriet, one of the Chain of Lakes.

We had our photos taken on the University of Minnesota campus. Within walking distance are a variety of architectures from the traditional red brick and Roman columns of Northrup Auditorium to the glimmering stainless steel of the Weisman Art Museum or the Copper-plated interior and modern fountains of the alumni center--the campus offers a variety of textures and backdrops.

I definitely recommend the MN Landscape Arboretum. They have over 3 square miles of beautiful outdoor gardens, most of the property has the feel of an English countryside estate. There are also a number of specially manicured gardens with everything from moss-covered ponds, roses and arbors, a Japanese garden, to picturesque fountains. It is simply a treasure, and has many plants and species native to Minnesota. I am a huge Jane Austen fan, and the first time I visited the Arboretum I knew I had to have my wedding there as it looked like a scene directly from an Austen book!
