Registry Faux Paux?

FH and I registered almost exclusively for camping gear. We are big time campers and would like new gear. Also, we added board games and a few other things. We are big card players and love games too. Part of our situation is, we live with 6 other people (family) and do not need household items or stuff that "traditionally" goes on registeries. Everybody that we've talked to, or have asked about it, have been very understanding because they know us and our situation.

My mom was also pushing for more expensive items on the registry. She actually told me no one would want to spend less than 50-75. It was an interesting discussion, sometimes I think she forgets that not everyone who is invited is her friend.

My dad's business partner registered for the most outrageously expensive shiit I'd ever seen. She registered for a set of 4 glasses that was $800. I would never want something like that. I'd feel terrible if I broke it. It just seems so crazy to me. What 20 something couple needs that?

My DH really, really wanted the dehydrator from our registry and it wasn't purchased. So I'm buying it for him for his birthday in a couple of weeks ... with our discount.

Patio furniture? So you'd have your guests (and if they were willing) to buy furniture off your registry to sit and sulk out in the sun, rain, whatever ...

There's a reason why there's checklists out there to help you with your registry, sure expensive goblets are kind of out there, but when we put together our registry (BB&B) it was for practical things, mostly under $29.99, with a few things over that...

Guests (if they are coming to your wedding, and they don't buy you something as a boxed gift) have to buy airfare, hotel, rent a car to get to your wedding, not to mention get a gift, find a nice dress, dress up their family, and think about out of town food as well :O. It seems like there's a lot on a guest's plate... I wouldn't resort to video games, phones, or patio furniture, etc to put on a registry. That's ridiculous!

So I've just been reading along because we were planning to do our registry next weekend and I haven't looked into it yet. Some questions for you knotties.... what discount? Do some or all places allow you to buy the unpurchased items at a discount afterward? If this applys to all things on the registry, do you think that is why people place odd or expensive items they want, to get the discount when no one purchases it for them?

Yep. Most will send you a coupon or discount card to use after the wedding date has passed. I believe Target was giving us 10% off the listed price of an item if it was on the registry.

I think I need to have a second wedding to go get some discounts. It's not like they actually check a marriage license.

Katie- Target doesn't care at all. When my youth group in HS built a new center, everyone at church kept asking what we needed. We created a baby registry

I think tools, lawn furniture and stuff for outside is more than fine. I don't really see a big difference between that and me registering for stuff for cooking and entertaining. I don't always get the registering for TVs and video game systems. I wouldn't give that gift but I also wouldn't judge someone for doing so.

I try not to judge registries but I just did yesterday. A cousin of mine is getting married and she has 6 registries (each has over 200 items). This I judge (oh and she put her registry info on her invite, eek).

This thread is more or less cead, but I just wanted to say I really do not care what anyone registers for as long as it is at various price points. Truth be told, I do not even personally mind the loathed honeymoon registries much, I figure they are free to ask for that and guests are free not to contribute to the honeymoon and buy something else instead-or not. Mind you, I would never HAVE a honeymoon registry, I just do not really mind them ill mannered though they may be.

Bummer - I think this was my original thread. It's interesting to see the comments. I figured a home improvement store was a good idea since we both have all the kitchen stuff and are literally combining 10 years and 2 households worth of bedding, towels etc. By no means were we going to register for a window or a $2000 saw of some sort. Mainly just little garden things for me and small tools for him. The patio furniture thing was something that has been on my mind because my parents have been hounding me to register for a large piece of furniture. I feel weird about that and thought that patio furniture (since we don't have any and we just moved into a house) would bit less expensive and still fulfil their desire to "get me something big". Their words not mine. We just don't need furniture. We've been donating the hell out of all our double sets of things already!

It does I guess come down to - where do you draw the line. I would never buy anyone a tv but lately I've seen a ton of registries with them on there. I've bought games for a couple once, they loved having people over for game night though. I've bought backpacks and tents before too. I think every couple is individual and if something suits them - I'm all for it. As long as there are plenty of price points - I'm fine with just about anything as long as I can afford it.
