Wedding Party

Spitting in the wind

So a girl on my month club board decided to post about how she is getting her girls ALL the same necklace as their gift to wear to the wedding. Then a bunch of girls chimed in saying they were doing the same. Some were even buying necklaces/clutches in their wedding colors, etc. I brought up that this really isn't a gift for them -- it is for their wedding. Well, needless to say I got every excuse in the book...

"BUT I asked them if they'd like it as a gift & they said yes!"

"I am not requiring them to wear it but I'd be tickled pink if they did"

"Well, they aren't helping me plan so I don't think I should do something personal"

"Well BM gifts are no big deal who cares"

I was about to say I hope your BMs apply the same enthusiasm to your bridal shower & bach parties as you did for their gifts!

Am I the only one who actually cares that my girls are happy, well taken care of & by god get gifts they actually enjoy?!

  • You're echoing all the things that everyone says here, and getting all the same responses we hear.  Some girls just don't want to accept that they still have to be decent human beings during their engagement.

"I think bablingbrooke is the 13 yr old marring her cousin at the town hall. Lets all give her a big hand. And hope her inbred children can live normal lives." -tabs.

  • I know, I used to post here so I knew you'd all understand....

I just find it terrible that I become the bad guy for questioning them. One girl a while back told me "I really don't care if they like it or not, that's what I am getting" -- I forgot to quote her when responding & she edited to a nicer/watered down version to make ME look like the jerk.

  • I don't even think that the same gift is bad - as long as you think that each BM would wear it again and you have no strings attached to the gift.
  • I don't like the idea of getting them cheap jewelry just for the hell of having them wear the same thing. What's the point? I totally get being on a budget, but I would rather get them a $10 gift card, or a good book, than spend $10 on shiitty jewelry.

I think jewelry only is an acceptable gift if it's something really good, like real pearls or a diamond pendant or another nice gemstone piece. Unless of course you know for a fact that someone wouldn't ever wear it again and you get it anyway.

  • I personally am doing the jewelry thing, but I'm getting them each things they would enjoy on top of that.... I don't really consider the jewelry a gift, more like an accessory that they can wear, but I think as long as you get them something else that they would enjoy on top of it, then it would be acceptible.
  • I don't wear jewelry except on very rare occasions, so to me it would just be junk.  I did end up getting all of my attendants the same thing--a leatherbound copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales--because I realized that they'd all appreciate it.  I had intended to get them each something different, but I lucked out and hit on something that all six would genuinely like.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • My one friend gave us cheap shoes and cheap jewelry for the gift. And we were required to wear them.

I did give jewlery for the wedding ... but I also did tack on $10 gift cards to places they like ... it wasn't much, but I also helped my sisters pay for the dresses, and DH and I helped cover the RB's tux (Which was my other BM's son) ... so they seemed to understand I didn't have the means to go nuts.

I can't remember if it was my club board, or the month before mine (I got married on the first of the month, so I would lurk on the prior month, since a lot of those girls were close to my date), but one of the girls seriously spent like $200 a pop on identical gift bags for her girls. Among other things, she gave every girl a new pair of Uggs in the color of the BM dresses. While I like Uggs ... I know they aren't for everybody, and I know how much they cost, so when I read that, I nearly vomited.

  • I did jewelry for each girl, but none of the pieces were for the wedding and they were all things that fit each girl differently.
