Vow renewal

FI and I have been invited to a 20 year vowel renewal.  It's at the church and then back at their house afterwards for a casual afternoon party.  Everyone has been asked to bring a dish to share.  My question is if we're supposed to bring a gift.  I have never been invited to something like this so I'm not really sure what to do.  If I am to bring a gift what would be appropriate?  FI has known the couple for over 20 years.

She has been battling breast cancer so it's been a very trying time for their family so part of me thinks that just having friends and family there could be enough.  But I hate to assume that.

Please let me know what you think is appropriate.

Thanks!

Re: Vow renewal

  • I woud say the dish is your gift.

  • I might be inclined to bring a bottle of wine (if appropriate), and a card with a modest gift card to a favorite restaurant.

  • If you are sked to bring a dish, a gift is usually not expected.  if you want to bring a gift, i agree w/ LesPaul, a giftcard will suffice.

I would probably bring a small gift in addition to your dish, but it's certainly not expected.

  • I would probably just do a card and the dish.  Depending on how well I knew them, I may include a GC in the card, or bring a bottle of wine.

  • I would get them a card and make something to bring.

Due to the long standing friednship I'd probably get them a small gift but that's just me.

  • I agree with the bottle of wine or gift card idea.  I would not go out and buy a big expensive gift.

  • You may have already been to the event, but if not, I think just the dish is appropriate.  Adding a card or inexpensive gift would be fine, too, I'm sure.  My husband and I are planning a vow renewal and our only purpose is to have a wonderful evening with friends and family.  If we don't get a single gift or card, that would be completely ok with us.
