fake cake?

I went to a bridal fair today and a bakery suggested the idea of having a "dummy" cake that looks like a normal wedding cake with a cut-out for a slice of real cake to cut into, and then having sheet cakes cut up in the back for the rest of the guests.  The cake we saw looked amazing and real and would definitely cut down on cost.  Has anyone ever done this or heard of this?

Re: fake cake?

  • The thing with fake cakes is that they don't save all that much.  It is not the cake that drives up the cost, it's the decorating.  It doesn't matter if it is cake or styrofoam, the baker is going to have to spend the same amount of time and energy decorating it.

The best way to save money would be to have a small cake for you to cut and then have sheetcakes in the back.

  • That's an interesting concept; I think my cousin did this and her FI cut into the fake one by mistake. This was at least 8 years ago so my memory of it was a bit fuzzy.

What PP said; small pretty cake for show and sheet cakes in the back.

I had a fake cake at my reception and it was gorgeous.  Nobody knew it was fake (they still don't two years later) and it did save me a ton of money.  We just cut into the top layer which was real and served a tres leche cake from the kitchen.  I would recommend it to anyone who wants to save money but still have a beautiful display.  Good luck.
  • Where can I get an Artifical Cake in Houston, TX?
