another? about name change

these may be a stupid questions, but I am trying to find out whether I need to take a day off work or two separate half days. So there we go...

I know you need to go to the SSO first. Do they give you the new SSC right away or do they send it by mail?
If they don't hand it to you, when do you go to DMV? after you get the new card?
Do you need an appointment to go there? how about to go to DMV?

You can do either or first.

I got my SS changed, then I went to the DMV. Your new social security card will come in the mail in about two weeks. You don't need it for the DMV.

When you go to the DMV, they make you take a new pic and put a dup on your license, even if you have the old one to hand in. Make sure you are ready for a new pic as I wasn't and look terrible in mine. Luckily, my license expires in a month and I will get a new pic where I don't have terrible roots. lol

    No need to stress!

You can actually go to either the SS office or the DMV first.  I did the DMV first because it was open later and gave me more flexibility about when I could leave school  on the day I was free to go ;)  All you really need in hand to take care of matters at either place is the original copy of your marriage license.

When you leave the SS you will not have a new card, but you will have a little signed certificate saying you've applied for a new card.  The new card will arrive in the mal within a couple of weeks.

Depending on how far away the office is from you, one half day might be enough...I went on two separate days and was in and ot of both the DMV and SS office within a half hour each time.  SS office took maybe five minutes!  You'll be just fine.

    cool! Thanks ladies.

Sam, thanks a lot for the tip. I didn't even think about the picture since I renewed my license a year or two ago and figured the picture would still be good!

I can't find my current SS card...will I need that to get the new one?

I didnt have my current SS card either, all you need is marriage license and photo ID.  I did this first for that reason so that my old name would be on my ID and match up.

Make sure you go around 2pm.. You will miss the lunch rush and beat the "I'm leaving work early to go" crowd.  :)  I was in and out both in about 15 minutes each.
