October 2012 Weddings

Photographer

Hey Ladies,
Our budget is extremely tight and we're still up in the air about hiring a photographer for the wedding so my question is this, if our wedding is October 13th, when should we make our decision if we are going to hire one? If any of you have hired a photographer, do we have to put a deposit down and then just make payments? Not sure how it all works. Thanks in advance.-Gabrielle

Re: Photographer

  • Hi Gabrielle!

My wedding is on October 6th and I have spent the last week and a half looking for photographers. We have been hit with a mix of ppl already being booked (most of the higher end photographers) and those still available. If I were you, even if photography is only a maybe at this point, I would begin scoping out photographers you like. Price points can vary drastically!

I know for the photographer we are probably going to go with, we have to put down a $500 deposit to book him for the day (but this includes our engagement session) and then we can make payments or pay in a lump sum a week before the wedding.

If you look hard enough you might be able to find a photographer who has off season prices and scoop a deal!

    Good Luck

  • I am getting married Oct 13th as well, we booked our photographer right after we got engaged in Dec 2010/January 2011. We had to pay a $500 deposit and then after we did our e-pics in October of 2010 and finalized what exactly FI and I wanted in our package, we were given a payment plan broken down into 4 equal payments, the first being added onto the depost and the last being due after we receive our proofs.

As far as when to make a decision, it depends on who you want for a photographer and hoping they dont get booked. Also depending on your budget how much time you will have to pay it off. As you can see by what I wrote above my FI and I have had plenty of time to pay our photographer, as of last week we are all paid up, and only owe him the final payment.
I guess all in all the closer it gets, the more likely a particular vendor you want will be booked. HTH
  • IF you look around and find people to be expensive or out of range, or booked.... Try going into places like Sears, JCPenny's, Picture People, Etc., etc., and see if any of the people working there do side jobs.  Our photographer is my MOH's boyfriend, and he used to be the manager of our local Picture People (until corporate closed the store).  So now, I know he does good work (tons of happy customers, plus his own personal portfolio), AND he gave me a really nice price.

    It's something to look into!

  • Thanks so much ladies for all your replies. My DF and I have been talking and we are ....well I am going to make some phone calls tomorrow and do some pricing around and see what I can find. Thanks again. I really appreciate it.
  • We got ours right away in August. But we got ours on craigslist. She does photography as a side job and is doing our wedding for $500 all day. I highly suggest checking out the craigslist "events" area. Just make sure to ask for references!

  • We booked ours right after we got engaged (July 2011) for our 10/12/12 wedding. Photography was one of our biggest priorities and we really had our hearts set on this photographer. The Albany, NY wedding industry is crazy and things book up so quickly We booked ASAP! We put a deposit down when we booked, we have a 2nd deposit due this month (at the 6 month mark), and the balance is due 2 weeks before the wedding.
