Favor Stations...Are they a good idea? Need input please!!!!

Hey there! So, I'm having a fall wedding...November 2012. It's a very simple, rustic, country, Texas wedding, with the ceremony outside and the reception inside. The venue is very rustic and country. I couldn't think of a good favor for the wedding and then I came across the candy apple or packaged S'mores idea. I thought it would be cool to maybe have either a S'mores station or a candy apple station for the guests to do themselves, with cellophane and ribbon for them to package and take home. I haven't looked too much into how it would work, and was wondering if anyone has been to a wedding where they have had this. Here are the ideas I've cooked up in my head:

A basket full of pre-stuck apples and small plates at one end. The cellophane and ribbons at the other end. In between would be melted chocolate, beer chocolate, and caramel as well as different toppings. (for the kiddies I would have pre stuck marshmallows and they could do the same with them). The S'mores station would be similar with grahm crackers, plates, chocolate, fresh fruit, etc at one end and the propane flames in the middle.

I would really appreciate some input! Thanks!!!!

  • I think the apples or Smores part sounds great but the guest-DIY part, not so much.  This sounds better in theory than in practicality.  Stations like this could move really slowly and your guests are going to be standing in line for quite awhile to get their favors. I'm not sure that open flames for the Smores is a good idea, especially with little ones around.  You're better off giving them the Smore supplies and letting them make their own at home or buying candied apples already done.

  • Ditto PP - s'mores and caramel apples are great favors, but the DIY is where it falls down.
  • I agree that these are awesome favors, but I would skip the DIY.  It sounds logistically complicated, and also could be REALLY messy.    I think I would just have everything pre-packaged for guests to take home with them.

  • Ditto Mrs. B - sounds great til you get to the DIY part.  It is messy and an inconvenience to your guests.  Everything needs to be prepackaged to take home, otherwise, you could have a lot of favors left over.  If I were to make a candy apple to take home, it would need to set and get hard before I could wrap it.  If I waited til later in the reception to do that I would have a mess on my hands!
  • I think you could make the candied apples beforehand, wrap them in cellophane and add a little tag. On the table could be a picture of you and your husband with an old basket full of apples and holding a banner that says 'I picked you'   ????

Or I saw someone did a small votive with those graham cracker sticks, mini marshmallows and chocolate chips with butcher paper covering and twine holding it in place. A tag that says S'more love or Love is sweet

  • The open flame does not sound like a good idea.  I just see peoples hair, dresses, hands being burnt, and the little kids sticking their hand in it.

I would just wrap up the candy apples.
  • I like the prepackaged smores idea - putting everything together with a tealight or something like that.  Or having prepackaged candy apples, but I think the DIY is too much, like everyone else said.
  • Thanks for everyone's responses! You make a good point about the open flames. I had just seen the idea on another site, and thought it was cute, but there are going to be several kids at the wedding. So, if I do S'mores, I'll just do a pre-packages kit with the grahms, marshmallows and chocolate. As for the apples, I'm not sure if I want to spend the money on buying pre-done ones, so I might just have to do them myself before the wedding. Thanks for all your help ladies!!!

  • ANOTHER SUGGESTION:: If my wedding were in the fall/winter, I would do the cellophane cone bags, filled with hot cocoa, and topped with a few mini marshmellows and tied with a ribbon in my wedding colors....seems pretty inexpensive, easy DIY, and WHO DOESN'T LIKE HOT COCOA???  But that's just me!!
