S/O "is it me" Kids and cow's milk

Out of curiosity, what is your view on kids and drinking cow's milk?

I never drank milk when I was a kid and hated it. I also have read many articles saying that cow's milk is not healthy for young children in large quantities, especially with all of the added hormones, chemicals, etc.

What is your stance on small children and cow's milk? Will they go straight from breast milk to cow's milk? Juice?

Re: S/O "is it me" Kids and cow's milk

  • My mom only let us drink skim milk and it had to have "no growth hormones" on the label. I don't see a big issue with it personally only because I still have a glass of milk every single day with at least one meal. So my kids will probably get it just because mom will be too lazy to put out more than one drink on the table. That's how Mr lil ends up drinking milk. ha.
    image
  • I only drink brands with no hormones added, otherwise my endometeriosis flares up.
I drank milk all the time as a kid. It's got calcium and other good stuff. Out of all of the things people give their kids, I would say milk is the least of our worries.
I also don't want kids, so my opinion is skewed by my lack of concern.

  • I had cow's milk and I turned out fine.  We use cow's milk at our preschool and it will never change.

I will probably buy organic for my kids in milk, fruit and veggies.  DH doesn't want to because we grew up on store-bought stuff and turned out fine.  I'd rather give my kids the best start I can.

  • I drank milk almost exclusively up until about 8, I think, and had zero problem. I still love milk. I get my milk from a dairy here town (well, I get it at the grocery store, but the dairy itself is in my town) and they don't use hormones. So probably, my kid will go from formula to cow's milk that I know isn't treated with hormones/chemicals/other bad crap. The sugar in juice isn't good for kid teeth, I don't think. If my kid absolutely hates milk, vitamins (to replace calcium and D in milk) and water it is.

  • I've heard plenty of arguments from some people that go along the lines of "you're an idiot for drinking milk, it comes from an ANIMAL and it's supposed to feed BABY COWS."

But whatever, I love milk, my kids will drink milk, and no one I know has died or gotten sick from drinking milk.  I think most kids drink whole milk after they get off breast milk?  But I'm no mom yet so I wouldn't know.

As long as I remember, I've had milk.

  • I'm not a parent, but honestly cow's milk has a lot more benefits than risks, so yes, they will drink it. I agree that choosing no hormones used milk is best, but sometimes that's just not in the budget. But I would definitely give them that before most of the juices out on the market today that are mostly sugar.

I was the opposite, I hated milk with a passion since day 1 and never drank it. Everyone told my mom I would have calcium deficiencies but I never did. Milk isn't the only source of calcium and I love me milk products.

This is a question out of pure curiosity, how much milk do you drink per week? Z is 4 but goes through about 2G of whole milk a week. That seems like a lot to me.
  • I giggled at cows milk.

When I was a kid, there were not that many options.  We just drank it and all ended up fine.

My cousin's kids hate milk, so all they drink is apple juice and I've never seen a kid that's been to the dentist more times than them. It can't be all that good for them.

  • I grew up on whole cow's milk after formula (my brother I think did soy formula then whole milk). This was quite a bit ago though.

I still drink milk, but I drink a different kind that has had the carbohydrates/sugar reduced - I've been drinking this only for 6 years now. Regular milk (doesn't matter if it's skim - whole) makes me sick to my stomach from the milk sugars.

  • We grew up drinking millk with EVERYTHING, and we've all grown up to be healthy adults. My youngest brother, who probably drank the least amount of milk out of the 4 children is the only one who has ever broken bones. My other siblings and myself haven't broken bones, even when we probably should have.

My nephew drinks milk, but it's organic and has DHA & Omega 3. That's probably what I'll do with our kids.

That's horrible. I know we had to drink skim milk because my mom was worried about fat content even though it's not supposed to have as many nutrients.
My brother hates milk with the passion of a 1,000 burning suns. He got water.
We weren't allowed to have soda and we were limited to 2 glasses of juice, usually OJ. I didn't have a cavity until I was 23. I blame the booze for that :)

    Vegas that's a good question.

I always drank milk ( I believe it was whole or 2%) as a kid. I dont think kids drink enough milk, now a days.
  • I drink a lot of milk.  A cup for lunch and maybe 2 cups for dinner.  And it is in my cereal!

  • I drank A LOT of milk as a kid, to the point where I would drink four or five glasses at dinner and not eat other food because I filled up from it, so I don't see any problem with it. I stll drink quite a lot of milk too.

That may be as much from not drinking water as it is the apple juice; I think kids used to drink a lot more water and public water has flouride in it, these days everyone drinks bottled water and probably brushes their teeth less or no more frequently than in years past, which translates into more cavities.

  • I didn't have a cavity until I was 22, and we drank milk or water exclusively for almost my entire childhood. But I also did floride rinses at school so I think that helped.

  • I'm really curious to find out when the hormones started. I'd like to take a guess and say the 90's...Can I just blame the 90's for most things?
    image
  • Well I was a kid, like, last week. There were hormones in the milk, and I'm fine. No super powers, but oh well.

I don't drink as much in the summer, but in the winter I probably drink a 1/2G a week.

  • Oh and I LOVE Chocolate soy milk. My dad switched to Soy when he was diabetic and it was really really yummy. I think it was Soy Slender brand.
    image
  • We go through about a half gallon a week. We go through more if I make cake, brownies, or cookies though. Most desserts just seem to go really well with a big ole glass of milk, so if I make dessert, we can go through a half gallon in like 3 days.

  • we've had cow's milk since we were weaned. started with whole, gradually lost the fat until I started drinking skim a few years ago. now H and I go though 2-3 gallons of skim a week. love love love love milk.

I don't think milk has much to do with cavities, though. sugar and acid, definitely. I drank a lot of milk growing up but I always had cavities. I have 2 right now that need filling. but I also eat candy and drink a lot of Dr Pepper, which hurts your teeth more than the milk helps. however, between my 3 sisters and I, and my DH (so between 5 people) there have been 3 broken bones and they were all mine because I'm hugely accident prone.

  • I grew up on 2% milk but I don't drink alot of it.  I heard that goats milk is the most similar to human breast milk but I have no idea if thats true or not.  then there is the soy milk and I just read a very scary article about how badly soy can affect you and so I guess that is out.  I feel like they will always find something wrong with anything.

here is a link to the article... its long and made me stop drinking diet coke...and i was a full on diet coke addict.

  • I didn't really drink milk after the age of 4 because I became lactose intolerant.  Both of my younger siblings grew up on 1% and adore milk.  When they are both home from college my mom usually buys 2 or 3 gallons per week (my dad also loves milk and always eats cereal).  I think milk is very important for kids to have while growing up (obviously as long as they aren't lactose intolerant like me!).  I'd like to think I'll have my kids eating and drinking hormone free and organic foods but really that will depend on other factors as well.

My parents didn't have soda in the house when I was a kid.  Just like we probably went to McDonald's at most 2-3 times per year that was when we could have soda.  Instead we drank a lot of juice but my mother would always mix the juice with mostly water.  I'm almost 26 and still haven't had a cavity.  =)
  • btw, multiple studies show that skim milk is the perfect post-workout drink to build muscle (because of the protein) and replace electrolytes.

  • Here's info on artificial growth hormones in cows. Their use started in 1993.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovine_somatotropin

We grew up with milk, and H is a total milk monster. He's cut back (from a glass with every meal) but we still go through about 1.5 gallons a week. We've switched to the stuff without artificial hormones.
