Been together almost 14 yrs.. Finally getting married!

My Fi & I have been together 14 yrs & have decided to make a big move out of state together away from both of our families. I told him that in making such a uprooting move that I wouldn't do it unless there was more of a committment. He then agreed & now I am in the beginning stages of wedding planning. I feel as though our families are not as excited for us since we have been together for so long and that doesn't make the planning process fun for me. The wedding is not until July 2014 but I want to make sure that I have crossed all T's & dotted all I's in this process (since we are paying for our own wedding) so I can show everyone that regardless of what they think or feel, that we think its a big moment for us! They're not against us getting married, it's just like they're all saying "it's about time!" We have decided on our guest list, booked our venue & thats about it. What's next? Should I sit back & wait until we get closer to the 1 yr mark to do anything else? Any comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  • Congratulations's first off on your Engagement!

I'm sorta in the same boat (long story not worth getting into....but people around me are basically saying it's about time), where as I'm actually getting married March 2013 in Mexico.

I have to say that you have ALOT more figured out that I have right now. We're still deciding on the resort we want to get married at and still haven't reserved our venue. We know which one we want but just have to wait till we figure out which date we're going down.

What I suggest is just soak in the enjoyment of the engagment. Buy magazines, get ideas and inspiration. You have so much time that you can plan the perfect wedding!!

  • Get your budget figured out would be the next step, and just slowly start researching vendors. Good photographers book fast in our area, so eventually that should be your next step.

Thanks for the info. I am only ahead of the game because my Fi is a hands OFF kind of guy so everything is left up to me to handle. He just wants to know time & location & he'll be there. lol. I had a few dates I wanted but so many things went wrong such as we wanted an evening wedding & at one venue they didnt have it avail only afternoon. Then another venue didnt have the date so since everything is my decision, I just looked at the calendar & pointed & that became our new date!! I planned my wedding far out because we are looking to move June 2013 so I wanted to give us time to settle in & still be able to able to be level headed about wedding decisions. I will take both of your advice & lay back for a while. I have looked into a DJ & may have a deal with him but my next step is definitely to look into photographers. I looked for some invitations but saw nothing that wowed me. I know I have plenty of time though.. When do you start choosing color schemes?? I think I'm just so excited I cant stop looking at wedding stuff!  Laughing

  • Thanks everyone for all the tips and advice. I have definitely looked at pictures but I think I will now look at some magazines! I;m sooo excited!
