Although it shouldn't be too surprising since people thought Obama's address on tv written at, what was it, a 10th grade level (?) was over most American's heads.

  • You know there are some people here who probably don't know the correct answer either.  I thought about doing a poll instead of posting that article to find out.  Oh well!

  • See, I'm always thinking about statistics like this. It says 1 in 4 Americans, but what they might not be telling you is their sample was taken from among Americans who were stoned at the time. Or perhaps suffering from low blood sugar? Or Americans who had recently been lobotomized! Because I can't believe this is true! Ok, yes I can. But I don't want to. I need a hug.
  • What really scares me is that a federal judge ruled that Mexico could sue Arizona in our own court system!  I was under the impression that as Mexico is not a part of our nation, they would have to sue the federal government in the world court.  And since when does a foreign country have the right to sue us because they don't like a law we pass, even if the "we" is just one state?

  • This doesn't surprise me at all. There have been multiple studies that show a lot of people think we co-existed with dinosaurs, so yeah.

Sadly, this. I've seen similar polls when people are asked "Who was the first President of the US?" "Who was president during the Civil War?" "Who did the US fight during WWII?" Etc. These are the kinds of questions that are on the test they give for citizenship and there's a decent percentage of natural-born citizens who would not pass the test.

Yeah it's called Good Riddance Day!

Just kidding.  Independence Day is our celebration of independence from them.  So no, they don't celebrate it.  Why would they?  They wanted to keep us.

Truer words have never been spoken..err, typed.
  • we can blame in large part our public schools.  history should be a 4 year requirement in high schools, as well as a basic civics course.

they simply dont teach history these days, and what tehy do teach, is often watered down.  was slavery a terrible thing?  yes.  the holocaust?  yes.  but are they part of history?  yes.  therefore, good or bad, our kids need to learn it.  its history, whether you like it or not.

  • The sad truth is, Calypso, it isn't taught because it isn't tested. Once it's tested, it will be taught.
Teachers are overloaded with trying to meet certain state requirements for standards in testing, and as much as they (once upon a time we) say we don't teach to the test, there comes a time when you have to. And the fun part, which for me would have been History, goes out the door.
If you are a superb teacher, or really, really on your game, you can weave history in, but most teachers are just trying to keep their heads above water. I spent $20K to get a license to teach (and a second degree), and I could only do it for 3 years. I didn't feel like the students were truly getting the best I could give them.

'Twas a joke, in case someone thought I was serious.

My mom used to live in England and people would tease her all the time on July 4th, saying they were so glad they got rid of us.

Actually, this doesn't surprise me at all.  I'm fairly certain it's because of NAFTA.  If something messes up with business for one of the countries in North America, they can sue the country with the law that is causing the issues.

The US has messed with Canadian laws a few times.  That's why some products in Canada (gas, I believe) have a chemical that is banned in the USA.  We banned it too, but the American company WON the lawsuit they filed when they claimed that getting rid of the carcinogetic chemical would mess with their business.

Sad to say, this does not surprise me in the least.  We are a nation with a generation of idiots that are slowly taking over.  I mean, have you seen some of the posts on this site?  No capitalization, run-on sentences, no punctuation, misspellings of common words and incomplete and incoherent thoughts are seen quite frequently.  Correct grammer and syntax is something we start learning at 6 and we don't stop English class until we are out of high-school.  People don't know our language.  They don't know our history.  The worst part is that some people don't care and won't care until a Wii game is made about it or a version of Real Housewives centers on it.  Heck, we have more people vote for an American Idol  than we do for the President and the other members of the government.

    ROCK IS KING!!
  • Yet, people are surprised we care about grammar and paragraphs on here.

Our parts and service departments had signs up saying "We will be closed Monday July 5th in observance of Independence Day"

A lot of people asked what independence day was.

    *facepalm*

No, that's not my real name. And FH's name isn't Nun (as in Nun ya bidness) either.
  • agreed on the comment about testing.  but the testing is part of the government run, tax dollar funded public school system.  so why arent kids tested on this stuff?

again, i place fault with the public school system, not the individual teachers (although many of them leave much to be desired).
  • I suspect it will be soon. When I started, it was only Reading and Math, and those were the subjects we emphasized, using some History and Science as reading materials, basically.
My second year of teaching, we test-piloted the Science tests and used kits to teach it. I'd never even heard of some of the things they asked these kids (call me dumb, but do you know what a Taiga is?)
My third year, the Science test counted. If we got to a point where we could add in Social Studies/History - awesome. But it was usually impossible. And that - along with J and simple burnout - was one of the reasons I left.

PS - vsgal:  Correct grammer and syntax - grammAr.

I have it on DVD and still watch it. We had a pop quiz in one of my American History classes to write out the preamble word for word. Since Schoolhouse Rock did that one (just omitted a couple of words, which I knew), I just sang it in my head as I wrote it and was the first finished. No one else got it right.
