Sliding Glass Door

Do you have a sliding glass door?  What do you have over it?  Blinds, curtains?  Right now we have the standard white slat blinds but I'm going to be changing the windows and putting up roman shades and/or maybe curtains, so the white blinds on the sliding glass door have to go.  But I don't really know what my options are.

Here's what we have now:

ETA: The backyard is wide open to other houses, so it has to be something that is closed most of the time, only open when we're home during the day.

Re: Sliding Glass Door

  • I ripped those off as soon as I moved in and put a nice curtain rod and curtains.

So do you just have the curtains pulled closed all the time and open them when you need to go in and out?  Just curious b/c we live in a subdivision so we can't leave it open all the time for people to see in.

  • I like the idea of Roman blinds...that's what I'm going to be putting up over ours, but so far I have nothing - but I have no neighbours either, so privacy is a non-issue.

  • UGH. I have those, too, and I HATE them.

Me too!  And once I finally do something to the wall of windows in our great room, those stupid long blinds will stick out even more.

    Mostly closed.

We're on the 2nd floor of a condo, but I still get creeped out about peeping toms or feeling watched.

I leave one small maybe 12 inch section open during the day so Lola can get some sunshine, but they're closed the rest of the time.

It just think they're so much nicer, cozier, warmer, homier than the white curtain slat things.

::stares confused at the random misplaced post::

I don't currently have a sliding glass door, but if it were me, I'd do like Alexia and put up curtains and just close them during the day. You could always get a double rod and put up sheers and heavier curtains and leave the heavy curtain open when you want more light.

My front door has windows on each side that run the full length of the door, but I hate the look of blinds in those windows, so I used a frosting spray to frost them so the light comes in but I can still walk around in my birthday suit if I want to. We also have a transom that I left unfrosted since it's about 8 feet up, but it all flows pretty well.

EDIT: Now the random post is gone, but I know I saw it. Unless I'm going crazy...
  • I have 4 sliding glass doors.  When we moved in, they all had vertical blinds, which I despise.  I pulled them all down and put curtains over the one in my bedroom and the one in the walk-out basement.  We dont use those doors very often at all, and those were the rooms that neighbors could most easily see in to.  It looks really nice, and we keep them closed.  If it's just the two of us and we need to use those doors, we just move the curtain usually.  If we have guests over, I keep them all the way open.  I just made sure the rod was longer than the frame of the door, so the curtains don't cover the door at all when they're open.

I have one in my kitchen that leads to a sunroom, and then one in the sunroom that leads to the deck.  The one between the kitchen and sunroom has nothing on it, and the one from the sunroom to the deck has a Roman shade.

I thought I saw another post too, it e-mailed me to tell me but it never showed up here.

Anyway, yeah I was just thinking about doing like Alexia did but adding a sheer curtain behind it for the light.  Hmmm....

I know! It's so apartment-y for the house. I hate it.

My SIL did something cute with hers. I don't know what they are called, but she hung 2 sets of wood horizontal blinds side by side.

  • Kate - they made Roman shades big enough for a slider?  Also, great idea about having the rod long enough to be able to open the curtains completely and not block the door.  I was just assuming that we would have to push the curtains all the way to left side to open the slider on the right.

  • I agree with the sheer curtain.  It lets in so much light still and is a really pretty option.

We did this in the bedroom, but didn't feel the need in the living room.

I just love curtains.  I feel like they make everything more homey.
  • I made straight vertical fabric panels (4) and attached them to a rod system. It's easy and I get to make new panels when I'm bored with what is up.

If you had a chance to post a picture of that, that would be awesome.

  • Ikea has really neat sliding blinds...when pulled open they almost look like art. They slide on tracks...I like those, it might not be your style though:

Same idea as what I posted above...I actually think it would really suit your home (judging by the pictures you posted).

  • Thanks everyone for the ideas and brainstorming.  I'm going to look into those panels as well as curtains with a sheer behind it.  Not together you know, but as two different options.  :)
