Originally we gave the Afghans weapons to stop Communism against Russia. I don't think they were called the Taliban at the time. I think Jimmy Carter started this and Reagan followed. Right?

I just don't think some countries are able to have successful democracies. Obviously having another government like Saddam isn't good, but I would think it would be hard to have a successful democracy in a place where religious differences and hard feelings run deep.

You're right Ricks. I was being flippant. We basically provided the weapons/training for them to fight the Big Bad Communists, and then left them high and dry when they got destroyed.

Who knows, I doubt it, but at least it would be nice to try to stabilize the country.
I am going to watch the speech tomorrow but I really don't think it will change my POV on him. Does he have answer about the unemployment rate? Why the huge waste of a stimulus bill isn't working? How much more money is he going to spend?
Those are different issues. This speech was specifically about our combat withdrawl.
I also have a pretty biased view about this issue. I have family in Iraq right now. Two of our close friends are leaving for Iraq in about 2 weeks. I want them all home. Selfish, but true.

I tend to be a little sarcastic when talking about history. I also tend to over generalize. And sometimes I ignore stuff I don't like. ;) You were right, we gave money to Afghanistan. We really did screw them over, imho, which bred some of the anti-American sentiment embraced by extremist groups.
