RANT: The "New" Knot

Okay, here goes...I've been wanting to write a bitch session post for quite some time now...and haven't gotten around to it. I'm home sick today and a wee bit grumpy so there's no time like the present.

Private Messaging: brilliant idea, HOWEVER one must have psychic abilities to know they have a new message. How about some sort of notification of a new PM.

Home Page Changes: This afternoon I had the unpleasant experience of trying to find the Community link and it was nowhere to be found. I have a routine here okay...I login to the knot, I click on Community and then I click on Chicago. I had to take 5 minutes to search the damn site to find out that they changed "Community" to "Chat". How about an email telling us you're changing the layout of the homepage as well?

Email Notifications: This really grinds my gears. Why in the world would they change how the notifications work? Just what I wanted, an email telling me soeone replied to a thread I'm watching, but it doesn't tell me what the reply is? It then provides a link to the post, but it takes you to the homepage. I then have to click on CHAT, then Chicago and then search for the listing. It's torture. I hate it. I'm angry about this one. Really. Angry.

S.L.O.W. UGH. Could this site take any longer to load??? Half the time, once I've clicked on Chat, then Chicago and then New Post, I get a white screen of nothing. I have to click re-load and then after about 30 seconds, it loads.

The Knot TV: if I wanted to watch TV, I would turn one on. I don't like this stupid video. It drives me crazy. i'm sick of waiting for it to buffer and then I click stop, and then if I click on another post, I have to do it all over again. Why can't they just add that as an option. don't force me to watch tv. my mom says it's bad for my eyes.

"I've had the time of my liiiife" this goes in conjunction with the knot tv. I now HATE that song. I don't hate it because it's a bad song, I hate it because I hear it every day, at least 3-4 times as I'm frantically trying to stop that video from loading.

Okay. Did I miss anything? What irks you about this "new" site?

I think I am one of the few people that generally likes the new layout - apart from the slowness.

Anyhow - bookmark this link: http://forums.theknot.com/Sites/theknot/Pages/Main.aspx/local-wedding-boards_illinois-chicago

That link has the Chicago board without any Knot TV. This way you never have to start at the home page and go through 3 steps to get to the board. Without the Knot TV the page is also slightly faster.

One more thing - under your private message page you can set up email notifications. The default is never (why, who knows?). Its in the light grey box beneath your messages.

Thanks Cirrus!! That link has improved my Knot experience ten-fold! I had to right-click the link and choose to open in a new window b/c when I just clicked it, it opened the same window w/the video. Yipee!!!

I agree -the new Knot is so slow! I usually just lurk, since by the time I see a post, usually everyone has already stated what I would have said. But now I find myself getting on less and less, because I don't want to wait forever for the pages to load.

A weird thing for me is that I don't always see the most up-to-date posts. My iPhone will pull up the message boards and new threads will be posted, but if I look at it on my laptop, there's just the old ones. I have checked every setting I know of, and even emailed the knot for help. No response!

My fingers are crossed that they are still working on things -

I come here on a lot less too, maybe just because I am not used to it. But I think the board has been really slow lately so maybe others aren't coming on either:(

I responded earlier, but my post never posted. Just another rant about the new knot. I agree wtih sgylling that fewer people are posting including myself. Also I haven't been able to use my screen name since the new knot- I had to make a new one. I"m still holding out on a fix before I add a siggy and such to my temp. screen name. When I emailed the knot ladies the first day, they said the screen name problem with screen names that have an "&" would be fixed immediately. I guess we have different definitions of immediately because that was over 2 weeks ago.

Hello. I'm pretty much a lurker since I only come on late at night and by then most of the action seems to be over. So hello everyone!

Thank you for posting this! I can't stand this new format!!! I don't understand why I can't see the newest posts at the top of the page. Also, it is way too slow and the TV thing is killing me. I also find myself coming on less often now that the format has changed. This stinks.

For those of you not seeing newest posts, make sure you have it clicked on the upper right hand corner of the page to see newest posts.

I know they're still working on bugs, so things will get better.

I'm so over the "hot topics".
"Reception Food: Opinions?", "Maid of Honor Dilemma", and "spray tan?" have been up there for DAYS!
Other than that, I downloaded Firefox which really helps everything load faster.

Firefox is faster, but I don't think some of the features work as well because they say in the faq that it runs "best" on firefox. Like the video that we all hate doesn't work on firefox and I thought the navigation was a bit better in explorer (I can't always get links around the boards to work in firefox). I'm just hoping that in a few weeks, the knot is running smoothly again.

I agree with all! I really hope everything is worked out soon! I'm trying so hard to be patient bc I love it here. One thing - I can't watch threads anymore? I click "watch" and nothing. Does anyone else have this or know how to fix? Although even if you respond I might not know it bc I can't watch! Ahhhh!

Thanks Cirrus for the link!!!! I know you posted it a while ago on another post but I couldn't find it....and of course couldn't remember who posted it. This makes it sooooo much better. I was sooooo annoyed with theknot TV. I felt it made the site run so much slower.

And FYI....on theknot homepage you can go all the way to the bottom and there's a community link there. That's what I did to find the Chicago board on this new homepage now.

When you click "watch" the thread appears in a watch list under the private message function (its another tab). In order to get an email you need to click "email replies" (green button at the top).

I'm actually not getting email notifications for posts on this board. I posted on my Wedding Club Board and I received the notification immediately. Strange.

Lol, you girls are so funny! I totally agree! I was trying to find a way to explain all the things I can't stand, but Kthame, you did it just perfect!!! I love when you say Grinds my gears! LOL

I have a routine as well, and I could not find the community anywhere. Also, where do you see the posts you have replied to? I used to just click on " MY Posts" Where is there a place to do that?!

I totally agree with you guys, why did they change it? Who can we talk to?!?! Haha
