How much should you pay the wedding planner?

I'm not sure what the going rate for a wedding planner is? I'm planning a destination wedding in Key West so I know we'll need a planner! Doesn't 20% of your wedding budget sound right? It's seems a bit high but if that's the going rate. The other option is the planner will email me a list of vender links and we contact them and secure everything and he takes over the last month before the wedding. If we choose that option his fee is a flat $1,000 and if we have him book anything then he gets 20% of what ever he secures.

I personally think that is too high....

Try contacting Nicole by Six Cents Events or Danielle Pearson. I've had great experiences with both and theyare very reasonable...good luck!

I think 10% is more reasonable based on what I've seen (but thats if you have a budget over 25k).

I think 20% is WAY high.  That's 1/5 of your entire budget! Unless they're doing EVERYTHING for you and you're very hands-off, I wouldn't spend that much.

I'd shop around a little bit more. I have a wedding planner [Danielle Pearson] who helps me with all my items for a flat package rate, she doesn't get a percentage based on what she helps me book. I think it works better that way b/c she chooses vendors to suggest to me that she has had personal, positive experiences with rather than vendors who might be expensive (aka she gets more money). also- look into your venue whenever you choose it, they might offer someone to help with day-of, which could lower the necessary items that a WP would have to do (aka less expensive).

Unfortunately I don't have anyone to recommend to you in Key West, but goodluck!!

I agree with PP, 20% is way too high. He seems like he's just money hungry.

The 20% of your budget I think is kinda standard. My budget went up after I secured a planner (maybe she feels jipped!) but I don't like the he gets 20% of whatever he books. To me that means he may not suggest the best vendors for you (they may not give kickbacks) instead he may only suggest ones he gets a cut of. Also one of the perks of having a wedding planner is getting deals (bc they bring so many brides to vendors) I usually get 10% off bc of my planner, so this sounds like it may add costs to you.

Hey Melissa- I'm from KW (having my wedding in May at Casa Marina) and can help you plan everything. There are seriously not a whole lot of vendors on the island.
