I'm pretty open about 20 or so, give or take.

Well, if we're playing openly, which I don't mind...mind was probably around $37K, I just updated my rough budget file. haha.

$60K + - they must be some seriously awesome (or just huge guest list) weddings!  I wanna go to one of those! haha

So far all I have booked is the reception but i plan on not going over 35k.

  • edited December 2011
60k + is the norm for the circle I am in. I went to one wedding that I think was around 40k, the rest have been 60k and up. Guest lists aren't huge around 200-250......

im budgeted over 60 (with honeymoon) with a guestlist of 240 which i think is a lot - it was mostly becasue of the guest list and that we are spending more on the venue then originally planned

<div>How do you know?  Did the people having the weddings tell you that?  (Just curious -- kind of based on the "do you talk about what you're paying?" poll earlier.)</div>

Ditto Chelsea wow!  My friends wedding was huge (list and all) and they only spent about 50...

Chelsea, I might be going to my first 60k plus wedding in March, crystal plaza, saturday night (albeit in march) and from what i hear every upgrade available (not sure how true that is but well see)

oooh, you'll have to report back on the food I am getting married there in July.  I've heard it's all excellent, but being that they don't do tastings, it would be great to hear people's favorites :)

wow, lucky! I've only seen pictures, but that place looks amazing. I know some people think it's the "trendy" place out in that area, but why not have your wedding there if you can afford it. It's incredible in pictures at least.

My in-laws went to a wedding at Oheka a few years ago ... on a Wednesday night in January.  Am I the only one who finds it really inconsiderate to guests to have a wedding on a Wednesday night just so you can have it at the flashy princess place that you can't afford for even Thursday, when there are so many great places they could have had it at for a similar price on Friday or Sunday or even Saturday?  I thought it was bizarre.

I guess so! If you look up the average wedding cost in the town I grew up on( I forget what website it is on that shows that information) that is around 55k.  Also, for almost all the weddings I have been to the families are traditional and the FOB pays for the entire thing, so that might contribute. FI's family is Irish Catholic. My family doesn't subscribe to that :( Just kidding.

As to how I know, for most just deduction based on the venue and peak season, the last few weddings I went to (85% on Saturdays peak season) Venetian, Skylands Manor in Ringwood, Hyatt Jersey City, A place in the Hamptons, Westmount.  Some people told me how much they paid so I know the exact cost for a few....

Edit: I wrote the wrong Skylands sorry!
  • edited December 2011
Isn't the Skylands at Randolph on the crappy side? Maybe I'm remembering someone say that incorrectly.  You also never hear people talking about it on here.

Also, not to harp on this, but think about it this way:

They say reception should be about 50% of your budget, food, cake etc.

    200 people * $150 pp = $30,000 * 2 = $60,000
    250 people * $150 pp = $37,500 * 2= $75,000
  • edited December 2011
Are the choices just for the reception cost? Or does it include flowers, dress, invitations, etc..?

<div>You're right about that, but I think the budget calculators can fall off on the deep end.  Certain services only get so expensive (can you really go overboard on limos?), and the brides who are spending a large amount just because of huge guest lists may not be going overboard on photographer or dress or limo etc. because their budgets are sucked up by the per person venue costs.  This isn't always the case, but can be.</div><div>
</div><div>The average by zip calculators are b.s. by the way.  My hometown is $44,000 - $74,000 -- could that range by any wider?  And my current neighborhood, the West Village (which is pricey even by Manhattan standards) is $19,000 - $34,000.  And probably many of them are having Manhattan weddings? </div><div>
</div><div>I really was asking though because I was wondering if this is something that you guys discuss amongst yourselves or if it was just guesses.  A lot of people I know who have the money to have fancy weddings wouldn't tell friends how much they cost, and wouldn't think about it enough to figure out who was the one who only spent $40,000.</div>

For this board, I think the categories are too low/should be a bit wider.

What's interesting to me is that for other places we've lived/boards I've posted on, 20K is the extreme high end, with most budgets coming in at $5-15K. I dare someone to link to this on P&E (I hate saying just E).
  • edited December 2011
I agree, that sometimes the budget calculators and location estimators are off, just using it to put a little perspective on what might be going on.

Some people did discuss with me fairly freely their budgets even before I was engaged.  I only really started thinking about it once I got engaged and started looking at places. Some of those places I looked at so I know the approximate cost. Before I got engaged, I never really thought about what weddings cost.....
