  My cousin just had a very similar situation.  They moved from NC to TX two weeks after their wedding.  The information was put out by word of mouth that gift cards or gifts shipped would be appretiated. Most people obliged.  If you know anything about little old Southern ladies, you know there were still gifts at the wedding.
  If they are registered with a big name store, the registry should be online.  Gifts bought online can be shipped directly to their new address.  Anything else will either have to be packed into the car or shipped.  I would pack heavier items in the car and ship lighter items to reduce shipping costs.

  We are also having a similar issue. I am moving before FI to his next duty station.
  
  Our problem is that no one will be at the address before hand to claim the items. I would suggest getting a PO Box because some/most of these items may need to be signed for.
  
  We spread through word of mouth that I am moving right after the wedding and gift cards/cash is greatly appreciated and keep the registry small.
  
  Our wedding is almost 2 months away so I don't know how well this is going to work. I'm sure I'll get the majority of our gifts at my shower next month which gives me some time to arrange shipping.

  Etiquette wise, there is no polite way to write or word what gifts are appreciated, because then it implies you expect gifts.  The best way to spread any requests about gifts is word of mouth.  Their registry can have their new address listed as a shipping address, and they can mention on their wedding website (if they have one) their new shipping address.  Most of their wedding guests are probably aware of their situation, so there is a good chance they will get a lot of monetary gifts or gift cards anyways.

  Thanks for your answers......they hope to have a place to live by July...Groom will be there ...Bride on East Coast....wedding in Sept......they will have no room in thier little car....two dogs, crates, suitcase each and that is about it.......as soon as they have a West Coast address they will put it on the registry and on the wedding site......and they have already put some info in the future plans section......we will definitely spread the word about wedding gifts.....worried about shower gifts.   They also have a weight issue for his stuff....he only gets 7000 lbs and there is couch, bed, tables etc......so even shower gifts, if there are alot and heavy, could be a problem in the shipment......UPS may be the way, but hate to have to pay that price........

  H and I moved both of our stuff within the 7,000 lb. limit since we weren't married when orders were cut and it was treated as a single move.  We had a whole townhouse worth of stuff, including  a whole bedroom set, sectional couch, dining room table, and lots more, and we were around 6,200 lbs, including our shower and wedding gifts. 
  
  Worst case scenario, they return the gifts at the stores here and get the gift cards, and buy them all again when they get to their new home.  But trust me, if people know about the situation, they will likely give monetary gifts and gift cards.  And they can do a small registry and request gift cards on the registry, which will further demonstrate that idea, without actually asking for cash and looking rude.
