Hunger Games (Spoilers)

Okay, I finally finished "Mockingjay" last night, and I would like to discuss. For those of you who haven't read all three/are planning on reading/don't want spoilers... don't read any further!!

So. The end of the book. Seriously? After everything that happened, three books worth of super intenseness... and she just wraps it up in a chapter?? Gale just goes to District 2 and is never heard of again?? How, exactly, did her & Peeta finally get together for real? Did her mother come back for their wedding, or did she just abandon Katniss? Haymitch just stopped visiting next door? Do they live in her victor house or Peetas? Does she have any communication with Plutarch or any of the surviving members in her prep team??

I loved the first two books - and the majority of the third one, but the ending REALLY pissed me off. After getting SO invested in all of those characters, to just have it end like that in one measly chapter SUCKS. Also, I'm still upset Finnick died.

  • I too was terribly disappointed by the ending. What an effing let down.

And since we are talking about spoilers...
I do have to say that I love when Katniss shoots Coin instead of Snow.

  • I am sad that FInnick died too. I feel bad for Annie. Not fair to her. Also sad that Prim died.

I was a little surprised at how quickly everything finished up, but I was happy with how it all turned out, so it didn't bother me much. I would definitely love for her to write another book talking about the years after the rebellion. I think that would be awesome too.

  • I like the ending. It was a simple life goes on type of ending and since I didn't really care that much about the love story part of the book I guess I don't care too much how they ended up together. I never liked Gale so I didn't care what happened to him. I guess even though it was simple I wasn't really expecting a fantastic ending.

I was sad Finnick died too.

  • I'm torn with the ending.  I like how it ended (Peeta & Katniss together with kids), but I hate how it was so abrupt, like it was in the present, and then BAM, it's years in the future, they are married with kids and the end.

Yup Bri, I agree on all counts. I wasn't a major fan of the third book in general, because it got all political and serious. While I did like it that she ended up with Peeta, it all wrapped up way too fast.

I'm hoping they do that thing with the movies where they make the ending way better than it was in the book - a la Chocolat.
  • I enjoyed the books, and the ending didn't bother me.... but maybe I should reread it. It was very, very late when I finished mockingjay.

I was very upset that Finnick died too--his death bothered me the most of all of 'em. I liked Rue, for example, but you always knew she was going to die. I didn't know that with Finnick. So it was a definite loss.

I wasn't keen on the ending. It was a little reminiscent of the Harry Potter epilogue (and I didn't care for that, either).

Also, I was pissed that Prim was killed off. I felt like Katniss got into all this with the original goal of saving Prim, and then Prim still died.

By the way, I gave my work projects Hunger Games characters as codenames (they're nice, short names), and now I'm getting coworkers to read the books.  =)
  • She killed Gale's character. Since before she left to go to the Games, he has been horrible since the end of the first book. I hate her character development with him. He never was really given a shot.

Concerning the end, I hated it. It went way too quickly from going to the mansion to the end of the war. As a writer myself, she took the easy way out I feel by making Katniss get injuried all the time. She used that to not have to write out the action scenes and rather just recap all of them. From a fellow author point of view, yea not too happy with her writing.

However, I completely adored the books. It was a good plot and kept me interested and active reading.

I agree that the writing wasn't all that great. I think that is exactly why the ending didn't bother me. After reading three books with a fantastic story told with only mediocre writing I didn't expect a spectacular ending.

<div>Exactly. The story was amazing. I go through books fast and I read each book in about 5 hours. Although, it was simple writing and exactly that, a quick read. It didn't make me thing too much.</div>
  • I really loved the books. I was forewarned about the abrupt ending, so that didn't bother me too much, especially since it ended pretty much exactly how I wanted it to. I don't like that Prim and Finnick died, but I guess that they accomplished so much that there were bound to be losses. I really liked the sense of camaraderie in the second round of the Games.

Totally agree. I was shocked when he died. I may have cried. A little bit.

And I also agree with Leia about Prim... the whole basis was that Katniss was saving Prim. And then she died. WTF.

Also, I'm going to have to say that I'm not totally on board with all of you about Katniss & Peeta. I really liked Gale. I think that I was just so pissed at the ending in general that when I got to the epilogue with Katniss & Peeta married with children, I just hated it.

Really? I couldn't stand his character. I kind of wish she hadn't put him in the books at all.

  • I loved books 1 & 2.  I diskliked book 3, and the way it ended was just abrupt, sloppy, and almost a little bit of an afterthought.  Honestly, it just seemed like she got tired and was like "This is good enough."
  • I felt the same way. I like how everything turned out, but not how it happened so quickly at the end. When Katniss said she wanted to continue the Hunger Games I completely called that she was going to kill Coin instead of Snow...go me! lol.

I'm really happy she ended up with Peeta, I just wish it would have been an additional book or something. As sad as I am that Prim and Finnick died, it had to happen to be somewhat realistic considering she let Katniss, Peeta, and Gale survive.

I really hope she will write more books about the world of 13.

  • Gah. TK ate my other post.

I also hated that Prim died... the whole basis was Katniss was trying to save her sister, and then she died. Finnick was the worst death for me though... it was completely out of nowhere for me. I might have cried. A little.

I agree with Shoes... I almost felt like she was just tired of writing, so she threw in the towel & was like, here you go, I'm done. I had SO many questions. I was so annoyed when I finished it last night. I had a hard time falling asleep because I just kept thinking of other questions!

I kind of have to go against everyone else that likes Katniss & Peeta... I don't know that I'm entirely happy that they ended up together. I really liked Gale.

I never really thought about that. After she did save Prim it became about saving Peeta, which she did. Which I am glad happened most of all.

  • I think Peeta and Katniss were way better together then Gale and Katniss. I always wanted them to end up together. But I agree, the ending was a complete letdown. After putting all that effort into the story and the love between Peeta and Katniss, she just kind of stopped. It didn't develop in the last book.

I felt like she just wanted to get it done. I wish the capitol scene had been shorter, I could have done without the Tigris chapter, and she had spent more time on the ending and how everything came together.

  • I honestly don't understand why so many people were so surprised and upset about the way Mockingjay ended.  I get that you wanted more, but really, you should have been prepared.

Both Hunger Games and Catching Fire ended with massive info dumps -- huge amounts of plot just skated over and explained in a couple of paragraphs.  It's Collins's style.

  • I did not like that Prim and Finnick died either. I felt like it was tied up too quickly.  I had so many questions after it all.  I still loved the books though.

    Anniversary

  • The books were never really about Katniss as a person to me. They were always political, and always about survival. Katniss never had an agenda. She was essentially a selfish character, but I appreciated that. Peeta was the idealist. I thought it was so much more interesting to hear the story from the perspective of someone who was more forced into a political role to achieve personal goals. It felt more realistic to me. Most people are not idealists, IMO.

In short, I didn't mind the ending, b/c to me it the books were not about a love story, although that tension did help drive the story.

I was PISSED about Finnick's and Prue's deaths, though. PISSED. I would have appreciated Katniss coming to a realization about Coin without her sister having to die. To me, that would have demonstrated more character growth. And Finnick dying was just pointless, IMO. Didn't further the plot or message in any way.

If you guys appreciated the arena parts of the story a lot, you might give Battle Royale by Takami a try. I read that years ago, and I couldn't stop thinking "She totally ripped off Battle Royale!" when I first started reading the series. But I connected better with the HG characters, and think Collins took the story further, so while I still really love BR on its own merits, I personally prefer HG.
