October 2012 Weddings

several things...

So I got a quote from a florist. We're looking at about 500. That includes: my bouquet, 3 BM bouquets, a toss bouquet. FI and his 3 GM's bouts and one for the plus 6 mom/grandmother corsages 3 father/grandfathers bouts Plus greenery for the church I just wanted something super simple. The flowers we looked at using are a combo of light pink roses fuscia mini roses and stargazer lilies with a little bear grass. I'd like to get your opinions on what you think about the price and flower combos bc I didn't know what kind of flowers I wanted.... Also. If I wanted to find a seamstress for my dress alterations how should I do that? The boutique has one they recommend but the stores over an hour away and they said I'd have to go to this ladys house. Appearantly the store doesn't have the space for the fittings. I'm not completely comfortable with that bc its a place where idk anything about I got lost trying to find the dress shop the first time. Also. We are trying to cut costs any way we possibly can because were way over budget. My mom said today that my aunt and a family friend offered to do the wedding cake as a wedding gift. Appearantly the family friend has done cakes before. Im so not one of those people that are gonna freak about the cake. I want something that's pretty simple. I just want it to be pretty....not perfect and for free where we'd be looking at 400. I don't think I'd really care. I'd prefer a square cake but I think they only have round pans that would be the one thing I didn't like. What do ya'll think? I wonder if I could find square pans...

Re: several things...

  • I am not up on all flower prices but I know that roses are pretty expensive.   So that 500 dollars sounds right. (just for comparison, the florist that I am going to go with said that she could do my bouquet and 3 BMS only with daisies and mums for about 170)

For alterations could you ask around on your home board, or at work.  Also maybe you could check that site called Angieslist.

I think that if you are not particular about the cake that you want that a family friend would be a good option.  You can get square pans anywhere really, and they aren't that expensive.  Ask her if she would be willing to make a square cake first and what size you should get.

  • I looked online and recommended sizes for a square wedding cake are 16 12 8 and 6 but all the sites say don't order the big pans unless u know they will fit in your oven lol I guess if 14 will fit in a regular oven we could do 14 10 8 and 6 and that should feed I think 150 ppl. So that would be plenty :

  • i think the floral quote sounds right, but if you're uncomfortable talk to another florist and see what they can come up with. Nothing wrong with shopping around.

I'd ask to see pictures of other cakes that your mother's friend has made to just to be sure, and if you're happy with them then go for it. FWIW, square feeds more people but if you'd have to buy the pans that does cut down on the $$ saving factor.

A family friend is doing ours too! If they offer and can do t, great. I'm not a picky cake person either, as long as it's edible and not hideous I'm good.

Flower quote sounsd good to me. It's about what I'm spending.

As for alterations, do you know anyone who recently got married? That's how I found mine...otherwise check your local boards.

Haha my sentiments EXACTLY as long as its edible and not hideous! My aunt makes awesome cakes and this woman has done wedding cakes before so if they do it together I trust that it won't be hideous and not edible. And if its saving me like 300 400 bucks I can't complain...

  • I had the issue when I first booked my florist where she told me that roses were some of the most expensive flowers to use, so I went to another florist to get a second opinion.  I ended up getting quotes from both places and they were in the same area for price.  I have a smaller wedding party, MOH, BM, parents and two attendants to help with everything, so for my bridal bouqet which is red and white roses with babies breath mixed in, a toss bouqet that is similar to the bridal bouquet,  MOH bouquet which is red roses with babies breath, 3 bouts, 3 corsages, 2 smaller corsages for the attendants, 2 red rose arrangements for the cake table, and 3 table arrangements for the Wedding party table, ours came in around $400.
