You're never obligated to bring a gift to anything. But that is the idea behind a housewarming party. This is just me, but I'd never show up somewhere without a little something- regardless of whether its a whisk or a bottle of wine.
How close are you to the hosts? That should be the deciding factor.

Yeah, I would probably bring a bottle of wine at the very least (or their beverage of choice--beer if they're beer drinkers, etc). It's a nice gesture, but not required.
Definitely at least a bottle of wine to share at the party and maybe some flowers or chocolates for the hosts. A nice plant is also a nice idea - a gift that keeps on giving!
One of my favorite housewarming gifts that I have received was a Barefoot Contessa cupcake mix and colorful cupcake wrappers. It was great, since you don't have to worry about matching their decor, and we didn't have to worry about storage since we use it all up eventually. I hate to bring things that will become clutter, so this was so great.

I would, even if it is something small.

Wine, of course, is always appreciated I think.
After that, I'd probably just bring a bottle of wine or something small.
