officiant ordained online?

Hi -- wondering if anyone who has gotten married in GA knows the procedure for finalizing the legality of your marriage after the ceremony. Our officiant is my brother, who got ordained online through the Universal Life Church. I've read on several message boards that people in other states haven't had a problem with the legality of this church (and according to GA laws, it should be fine). However, when I called the local court to ask what the steps were after the wedding took place, the person I spoke with was very cagey and kept "advising" me to have an actual preacher of a church perform the ceremony. We're really hoping my brother can do it, but obviously want the marriage at our ceremony to be legal.

So, has anyone gone through this process? Does he just need to return the license to the probate court and show proof of ordination? Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance!

You don't have to have a "preacher from a church" marry you. I'm actually a little shocked that someone would say that to you. I would call back and talk to someone else at the court. If they confirm what the first person told you, then maybe your brother needs to research what else he needs to to in order to become ordained in this state. Good luck!!!!

My brother got ordained online. All he has to do is take his certifiacte to the clerks office and get approved before we actually get married. We find out in a day or two if the county (Crisp Co) is going to accept it. Have your brother go to the clerks office and talk to them with a copy of his ordination certificate.

Thanks for the response ladies, I'll check with the court where I live rather than where we are getting married to see if they are more helpful.
