dress shopping - really effing crappy appointment

I went dress shopping yesterday with my mom, sister and friend. I had a great time and found 2 dresses that were almost perfect. I felt so sexy in them... I'm a size 14/16 but I'm pretty confident with myself.

Today I had an appointment at another salon, this one an outlet. So you can't order anything, you buy the dress that's available in the shop.

She asked what size I need and I said 16, so she shows me TWO dresses I can try! Then she takes me to another room, to a rack of about a dozen 16s, but they're all the uber-conservative with sleeves type of dress... um not what I'm looking for. The two normal dresses are nothing I'm interested in. I looked around for some 14s that I might fit into, and there are a few but nothing I want to try on.

I just felt so fat and disappointed! I actually started to cry, which isn't like me at all. Only my mom was with me and she didn't know what to do.

I'm usually so confident and self-assured, but this experience sucked. I just wanted to vent :(

The one thing that's making me feel better is looking at the pictures of me in the two dresses I loved. I felt so hot in them:

CN: I'm bigger than average, and went to a dress shop that had almost nothing in my size. It sucked.

  • I think number two looks beautiful on you!

Gown shopping is a difficult thing if you're not a sample size. I had a hard time shopping because the sales people seem to feel that they're entitled to cast judgment on your shape- and me being skinny with essentially no boobs seemed to be something that they felt they could/should discuss with me. In any case, I came by this article that I thought had lots of good advice for not getting you down if you don't fit the sample stock- it's aimed at bigger women but I think it really applies to the vast majority of us who don't look like barbie.

  • Sorry you had a crappy day, that sucks.  :( I love dress #1 on you, looks great.  My dress has a combo of rouching and beading at the top, so I can vouch that a dress like there is out there somewhere! :) Good luck!
  • I like dress #1..
I am sorry you had a bad day.. that sucks. I hope you can choose the dress you like between them two or if you have more shopping that you can enjoy it better then today.. Good Luck, try to have fun.

I too am a bigger size and I was scared to try on dress's the shop I went to actually had a good amount to choose from, It was very early to try them on since my wedding is in 2011 but I just couldn't;t wait no more. I guess you could call it a "mom n pop" store sorta thing. I think I will be going there.  I get scared thinking about it though since I am a big size.

I hope you have better luck next time around.

  • I'm sorry you had to go through that :( However, I'm so glad that you found two amazing dresses already! I think they're both really beautiful, but I have to say that the first one is smokin'! You have amazing curves, and it really shows them off. Your FI is a lucky guy ;)
  • THat does suck! I am an 8 in pants, but I have a large ribcage, a nice rack, and broad shoulders (no hips to speak of), so when I went to try on dresses only the 16s would zip up. That's why I dread dress shopping in general, though, even for work.

I fond my dream dress, I think, but a lot of the more closely fitted styles I tried on just looked mishapen on me because the sample was a 6.. It was realy hard to see how it would look on me.

Keep trying. YOur dress #1 looks gorgeous on you..

  • That first dress is AMAZING. I don't care if the tag said size 26. You look fantastic. I'm sorry you had a shitty day. You are beautiful in both those dresses. Own it.
  • You gals are making me love the first dress even more. Thank you thank you thank you for all your sweet comments!

  • I am also a 14 and was worried about the sizing in dresses.  However when it comes down to it, wear the dress that makes you feel beautiful.  The size of a dress is just a number, there is no regularity in designers for dresses or anything else for that matter.

So if you felt great in the first 2 dresses stick with that style and go from there, you will find something that makes you feel great!

And screw that second boutique, they obviously only carry sample sizes therefore are missing out on the real beautiful women who will look just as beautiful as those sample size women!

  • I am sorry you had a crappy day, but I agree, both dresses look great on you. I am in the minority and like dress number 2,

I am dreading dress shopping in January. I am very top heavy. I wear a 10 in pants, but always have to order 16 in dresses and then have them altered. I have no butt and large boobs, I have a feeling it won't be an easy experience because dress shopping never is for me.

  • Love #1

If that's not IT, keep looking.  Gown sizes make everyone feel like a total hog

    It's just not real!
  • also, you could be 25 -25-25 and that's NO fun at all.

Happy shopping but I do love that first gown on you
