groomsmen as ushers

My FI is struggling with asking some of his cousins to be ushers.  We are tossing up between having our groomsmen be ushers or asking more cousins to do it.  Is anyone else having groomsmen as ushers?  Is this ok?  What about tuxes?  Do ushers need them?

We're having groomsmen as ushers - we didn't want to add extra people to an already huge wedding party. The only potential issue for us is having the groomsmen turn around after the ceremony and usher people out. (I have a feeling they'll be hoping to make a beeline for the cooler in the limo.)

I've been to weddings where the ushers just wore their own suits or dress pants/white shirt/black tie. Maybe let them choose as a group what they'd like to do?

We are not planning to put our ushers in tuxes - just dress pants and a suit coat.  But, our ushers are younger - 15 and 20 so we didn't want to cause added expense.

I think having the groomsmen be ushers would be fine.  Personally, I would probably prefer to have someone out of the wedding party be ushers, but I've seen others use the groomsmen and it worked out just fine.

I actually think that is a good idea. It simplifies things and doesn't add extra costs for friends and family. We might do the same thing now - thanks,

We had one designated usher (wore his own suit) and then the three GM helped before the ceremony until they had to line up.  It went really smoothly.  The one usher just dismissed people by rows and everything went very quickly.
