Alternative garter toss. Tacky or funny?

So, I wasn't sure if I wanted to have my fiance's head up under my dress in front of a lot of religious folks. My father, who is obviously not too religious but isn't for the garter idea, gave us an alternative.

Instead of my fiance taking my garter off...he says I should take a garter off of him. He would put it on before the garter toss and then I'd be the one taking it off. Tacky or funny?

  • Eh...I think anything with the garter is tacky. I would just leave it out, you don't have to do something just because its tradition.

  • I think that would be funny as long as FI is OK with it!

  • I think the garter toss is tacky in general. You're completely justified in not wanting your soon-to-be husband's head up your dress around all your relatives. You don't have to do one so just leave it off your schedule for the day, I'm sure none of your guests will be offended that you didn't do it.

I agree with all of this.

  • Whats the point of the garter toss in the first place? I never figured that out, what is it supposed to mean or symbolize?
In anycase, unless it really means something to you, I would skip it altogether. If it is important to you and your fi is cool with the alternative, then go for it. It seems kind of weird and awkward to me, but its just nms. :P

  • I would either skip it or the alternative idea would be cute and cause quite a few people to laugh instead of be disgusted by a traditional garter ceremony.  So, if you want to incorporate it for giggles, I don't think it would be tacky!

[QUOTE]well your FI doesn't have to have his head up your dress and remove it with his teeth.  I have seen plenty of times where the garter is removed with class not trash.  But if you aren't keen on it either leave it out or try the new idea.  It is your wedding!

Exactly- you can always put it lower on your leg, it's not like he is going to be all up in your crotch.

  • So, as a part of my reception table decor, I'm adding in fun facts about wedding traditions, for example, why do we toss the garter?  So just in case you are interested here goes:

We toss the garter because "back in the day" brides were considered to be very good luck.  The local single ladies wanted to have some of her luck to take home after the wedding, and would rip away at her dress if they could get to her.  Thus, the bride started tossing one of her garters and running as fast as she could in order to keep her dress in one piece.  When you toss your garter, you are wishing good luck and blessing to your guests.

Yes, it has become more funny than symbolic, because most people have no clue about why on earth we have the traditions that we have.  Same goes with the bouquet toss.  You are tossing a bit of your luck to the next girl, right?  She is supposed to get married next.

There you go, a little bit of wedding trivia for you!!  Haha, hope this was interesting to you.
  • my family always looks forward to the garter toss but my fiance's family doesnt do the toss they do a Garter auction. They have the Dj take bids for a silent auction and the highest bid gets the garter you can donate the funds to a a charity or to your honeymoon.

Oh my, auctioning of undergarments for charity?
  • Auctioning a garter? Sorry, that sounds VERY tacky and in poor taste. Begging for money in any way, even a dollar dance, turns so many people off and makes people look like gold diggers.

  • We aren't doing a Garter toss for 2 reasons.

    1. There will be 2 single men there( besides the little kids and we don't want to have them stand with the single men).
    2. We thing it's stupid!
