Fate of Wedding Dress AFTER Wedding

What do you all plan to do with your wedding dress once the party is done and you have danced your way out of it?

I am torn.  Between selling it when I know if I am going to get rid of it I want it to go to the brides for breast cancer program.  I also think I may want to wear it till the soon to be hubs can no longer stand it.  I dunno....Not really sure how I feel about it right now.
S'mores. Just S'mores please.

Re: Fate of Wedding Dress AFTER Wedding

  • I'm re-donating it to Brides Against Breast Cancer.

  • I saw a picture where someone had preserved it and hung it in a shadowbox in their house. That is too much for me. I will probably donate mine to Brides Against Breast Cancer also.
  • I bought a preservation kit from Davids Bridal. I got it for $75 since I got my dress there. I basically drop off the dress and they dry clean it, preserve it, anti yellow it, all that junk and put it in a box all nice and pretty that has a clear window type top.

All said and done I dont know what will become of it, but itll be neat in a box taking up little space instead of hanging in the back of the closet.

  • I don't understand keeping the wedding dress unless you're planning to reuse it in some way. My mom kept her wedding dress and all it's done is sat in their basement for the last thirty years. My sister and I are splitting her veil and apparently my sister's finding a way to reuse pieces of the dress (my sister is 6' tall to my mom's 5'5", so that just wasn't happening unless she intended on a 1980s tea length with a full train), but I just don't get it. Someone else can use it, and it could be that other person's dream dress.

  • I will probably be selling it. I cant see spending money on having it preserved for Idk what and having it sit around in my house for years to come.

  • I'm totally keeping mine. I know that I have no use for it and it will never be worn again, but I still want to keep it.

We have my mother's, my grandmother's, my sister's and now mine. I've tried them on before and it's just a nice piece of history to have. My sister wore Monique Lhuillier, and there was even the possibility of me wearing her dress. I'm glad I was given that as an option.

Although it isn't the "nicest" thing to do - I've saved up for this bad boy and want to keep it, even if I do nothing with it. Maybe my future kids/nieces someday will want to play dress up? I dunno.

  • I am probably keeping mine. I love the idea of my daughter or granddaughter wearing it one day (and I like to think that what I picked out is timeless enough to do so, but that could also be crazy thinking).

I'm not set on it though. We'll see. I feel like I am going to be one of those that pulls it our on my anniversary and walks around in the house with it on too. ;-)

  • I'm keeping mine, and oddly enough FI reminded me to look in to preservation, since his mother's dress was never preserved and she had to throw it out.  My sister had her dress preserved and I doubt anyone would want to wear it again, but had my grandma's dress been preserved I definitely would have worn that.  It was a timeless satin dress that would still be very fashionable now, unfortunately something happened and there is a huge hole in it.
  • I haven't even begun to think about this yet, I'm still trying to figure out where I'm going to have it altered.

I dont think FI would think I was crazy, I KNOW he would think I was crazy! But, it makes me feel so special and if I can still fit into it I am still fitting into it!

(I am mostly joking. I wouldn't want to break the preservation or whatever. But, I do think it would be cool to have a future generation wear it)

  • i am re donating as well to BABC
  • I had considered a "trash the dress" session but after what I paid for the dress, theres no way I will trash it.

I will either keep it, or just donate it knowing it can make some other bride feel amazing.  Maybe I will wait to make my decision till after I have children.  Then it would be a very easy decision depending on genders.

  • My mom kept hers and had pictures made of my sister and I dressed up in it when we were little girls. Shes also now making quilts for each of us out of it. Theyre absolutely stunning. Im so happy she kept hers to make us such a meaningful gift. I picture myself doing the same with mine.

  • granted i just tried on dresses for the first time yesterday, i'm thinkin' i wanna to keep mine, even though FI is joining the army and we will be moving a lot, i think that is something that i won't mind taking with me every time we move. I saw a pin on pinterest where someone had gotten their dress framed, and thought that was a really cool idea, so maybe i'll do that. I also dig the idea of one day passing it on to a future generation, probably because neither my mom or grandmother had a dress to do that with and i kinda wish they had.
