Dress Change

I love my dress and really dont want to change it for the reception. But..... this weekend we were at a wedding expo and we were talking to a seemstress and she asked if I had considered altering my mother's wedding dress and wearing for a get away dress or for the last hour or so of the reception. My mom and I LOVE the idea. My mom is deciding if its ok to shorten her dress.... we are just really back and forth about the idea. What do you ladies think?

Re: Dress Change

  • Before my alterations appointment this weekend, I was 95% sure I would get a second dress. This was mostly because I hated how the salon originally bustled my gown (it was... less than awesome). However, after meeting with my seamstress, her idea for how to change the bustle makes it 100% more beautiful, and I think I might keep my dress on all night! However, my dress is extremely heavy, weighing at least 15-18 pounds, so I still might look for something more comfortable to change into for dancing - after the program is done.

Just do what is right for you! I think it sounds like a wonderful idea to modify your mom's dress, since you both love that idea.

I agree with this 199%. If it both works for the both of you, I say do it! Not many brides get the chance to wear their mom's dress

  • Thanks ladies... I love it too. Here are some options I am thinking of doing....

    1. Wear it for RD
    2. Wear it for last dance and get away at reception
    3. Wear it for gift opening the next day

    Thoughts?

IMO I think this is the most meaningful and best option. I think its great that you want to wear your mother's dress even if it is for a little while. I am sure she would be honored no matter what you decide =)

Our children wont be baptized until they accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, so this won't work, but thanks for the idea!

  • I think it's a great idea! My vote would be for the last dance/getaway. My dress is lace and very light so I'm going to wear it all night. I do have to leave my dress at the venue, though, for my mom to take home, so I'll be changing into something else. My mom's dress is out of the question, though, it was an ugly 80s dress! Haha. I'll probably just find a cute white dress to wear.

  • My moms is packed up and she offered to let me try but I think it'd be insulting to her to ask if I could shorten her dress to wear to just leave
  • I agree with pp. Go for it.

That is why I am leaving that decision up to her. It is her dress from one of the most special days of her life... I would never try to convince her that I should shorten it. It HAS to be 100% ok with her.

  • Can you post a picture of your Mom's dress? I think that would help me get a better idea of the style and what it looks like shortened vs. long as well as the formality of it. For what it's worth, if I could have worn my grandma's dress I would have. It looked just like Grace Kelly's, but with short sleeves. Unfortunately one of their dogs got into the box even before my mom got married.

I had a friend who wore her mom's wedding dress to her rehearsal dinner.. maybe that could be an option. It was altered of course so it wasn't as formal as the original design.
  • I really like this idea.  I think #2 option is best!

  • I'm going to be a difference of opinion and say I like the idea of wearing it as a RD dress. Just depending on if you want your dress to be the only dress you wear the whole day of your wedding. And you'll be able to wear your mom's dress for a lot longer during the whole dinner night. And you'll be able to explain the dress/meaning of it to your close friends and family at the RD. If you do it as your last dance/departure dress, your guests will see it, but they likely won't know the meaning behind it. I'd say do whatever would make you and your mom the happiest!

Btw, I assume you were at the Wedding Expo this past weekend? What seamstress did you meet with? I'm looking for a good one in the cities! :)

  • That's a great idea! My mom got married in 1987 and her dress was the epitome of the decade: frills, lace, poufy sleeves, the whole nine yards. I wouldn't dare think about wearing it. (Even she thinks it's tacky now.)
