Laser Hair Removal

Have any of you done this? I've been considering it for a while (b/c of medical stuff, I'm a fuzzy gal), but if I'm getting married soon, I don't wanna be more hairy than the groom, ick. So, have any of you done LHR? If so, any advice/comments?

Edit -  I've been doing my research, but people seem to be a bit on the fence about it, depending on where they go. I've read about people getting terrible burns, or people that love it and have gone on to to it many more times. Is there anything to watch for?

Re: Laser Hair Removal

  • i loved it!

    that being said:

it's not a 100% thing.  you may need more sessions than you think.

i never got a burn because i went to a very reputable palce and because i was a great candidate-pale w/dark hair.  any other combination is harder to perform the procedure on so the chance of burns is greater.  feel free to PM me with other questions!

  • I got my first session done and my second is scheduled.  From what they told me, typically you need 6 sessions.  Even after my first I can notice a difference.  Definitely make sure you are a good candidate i.e. pale skin and dark hair.  Also, avoind the sun and wear spf before and after treatments.

Definitely no burns and I didn't even think the pain was that bad, more just startling.

  • I did it with a big reputable company and did 8 sessions, I think it was, on my upper lip, underarms, and brazilian. The effectiveness of it depends on your hair and skin type. I have a fair complexion. It did basically nothing to my upper lip because my hairs are so fine, slightly dark and fine. The majority of my underarm hair is gone. I used to have to shave every day. Now I shave about every 5 days because I still get a little bit of hair. The really dark hairs in my bikini area are gone but I still have lighter hair growing. It was still worth it, though, in my opinion. I just wish the place I went to told me it would do nothing for my upper lip. They've been around long enough to know what works and what doesn't.

As for the burn, I did get burnt twice "down there" and had to use aloe. After three days it healed.

  • I've had LHR on my underarms and I'm currently getting it on my bikini line.  I was only able to get about five sessions for my underarms, so I still get a few sporadic hairs there once in a while.  I've had four treatments on my bikini line and can already see a huge difference.

The procedure can be uncomfortable, but I've never had to use the numbing cream and any redness has been gone within an hour.  When they're lasering "down there" around the labia, it can get really hot for some reason; I just grit my teeth and bear it because it's just a few seconds and it's over.

If you want to try it out, I think the underarms are a great place to start.  As was said previously, however, your skin can't be tan.

You can only go every 6 weeks or so.  Since your wedding is in 7 months, don't expect to be hair-free, although it could be very well thinned out.

  • I went to American Laser Center and got my legs, underarm, and bikini area done. While I technically paid for a year's worth of sessions, they guaranteed another two years of sessions if you still had hair - which I did. I'm Italian - pale with wayyy too much dark hair.

After three years of sessions every ten weeks, I never got used to the pain, but I have very little hair now! There are a few here and there, and I shave them because I'm obsessive like that, but the truth is I could go a week without shaving and no one would really notice.

Keep in mind that what is guaranteed is permanant hair REDUCTION, not removal. I've noticed that I'm getting some more hair than usual, and am thinking about doing a few touchup sessions.
  • I'm in the middle of treatments for underarms and bikini. The pain really isn't bad. It doesn't feel good but it certainly isn't unbearable. I've had 2 treatments on each and I already notice a big difference. The hair takes much longer to come in, and is much finer, and there ins't as much over all. If you're on the fence I would do it. I'm glad I did.
  • I've had laser hair removal.  I have very fair skin and very dark hair (as you can see from my siggy pic).  I finished treatments on my underarms and upper lip.  I haven't had any hair come back on my underarms except for incredibily blonde, very fine hair.   I do still get some hair on my upper lip as a PP said, but it's barely noticable. Before, you could tell when I was overdue for a lip wax.

Right now, I'm having my bikini & my legs treated.  I've only had 2 treatments.  My 3rd treatment is scheduled for about a week or so before the wedding.

It doesn't tickle.  It kind of feels like someone is snapping you with a hot rubber band.  But like a PP said, they can prescribe a numbing cream.  I have never had any problem with burns, but that's because I don't tan.  You can't tan when you get LHR.  Also laser hair removal is something where you need multiple treatments.  For my underarms, I had treatments for almost 2 years.  I had 5 sessions every 10 weeks and then 4 sessions every 12 weeks.

If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.  I go to a place called Ideal Image, and I couldn't recommend them more.  Granted, mine is in Delaware, not Texas.... but I know that they do have some locations in Texas.  I'm not familiar enough with Texas to know geography.  I know that there's one in San Antonio.
