Poll: The most ridiculous weight loss thing on TV

I don't watch much TV (I'm simply far too busy for it) but when I was at home recovering from surgery I notice a LOT of super ridiculous, ineffective (at least, they look ineffective), gimmick type of weight loss or health and fitness product.

Which one do you think is the most ridiculous?

  • I'll start.

I'm pretty sure the whole diet where you eat nothing but cookies is the lamest one, in my opinion.

  • I don't know if they sell this one on TV but my boot camp instructor (this pissed me off by the way) and a member of my bootcamp tried to convince me to try this $200 11-day cleanse. Over the course of the 11 days I was going to eat only dinner and drink this cleanse crap for lunch and breakfast - oh wait, except for the FOUR days that I was to eat NOTHING, and two of those days had to be subsequent days in a row. The member of the bootcamp (my co-worker) said that she lost 8 pounds before her wedding doing it. OF COURSE SHE LOST 8 EFFING POUNDS...If I didn't eat for breakfast or lunch for 7 days and ate nothing for 4 days I had better lose something, and then pack it all back on and then some after.

Also, why would I pay $200 for something I could theoretically do for free...not eating shouldn't be something you have to pay for. Plus I was SO angry that the dude who was teaching my bootcamp was actually supporting this idea!

Again, I don't think they sell this specific one on TV, although they do have a guy named Clem who sells Colon Cleanse up here but I don't think you are supposed to lose weight from it! (and by up here I mean Canada!)

I just saw this on Rachael Ray... there's a new procedure where a plastic surgeon sews a polyethylene patch onto your tongue. It makes it painful to eat solid foods so people will maintain an entirely liquid diet to lose weight. And just FYI, RR isn't promoting this, it was in a WTF segment along with wigs for your cats.

  • Oh yeah, the shaking weight thing cracks me up. You're supposed to tone your arms by doing nothing but hold this thing? I wish it was that easy!

Unfortunately, I was gullible and bought the Carmen Electra Striptease Aerobics off an infomercial. What a waste of money! It was not exercise at all... and doing it by myself made me feel ridiculous, so I can't even imagine doing it in front of my Fiance! He would laugh!
  • Embarrassingly enough, I tried that stupid ass Sensa Weight Loss Supplement. It's the one where you "sprinkle it" on your food and it supposedly claimed to make your mind think you were full after a couple of bites or whatever. Complete waste of money and I felt like an idiot carrying around what looked like a birth control device that spinkles salt.

I admit I buy alot of as seen on tv crap, and out of everything I have ever bought, only one thing was useful....The windshield wiper on a stick for inside your car's windows. What a pain in the ass to try and wipe that damn slanted window. Cloth on a stick....such a great idea!

  • The thing that you put around your belly and it "stimulates" your muscles to lose weight. I'd imagine it would be about the same as a tickle session.

  • I know that a lot of people really like it (so I apologize in advance) but I think that The Biggest Loser is one of the most ridiculous weight loss thing on TV.  Sure - they advocate hard work and clean diets so I applaud that.  But the amount of weight that they lose on each show is not attainable for the viewer and I think it encourages some people to resort to crash diets and other extreme weight loss gimmicks.  They don't really tell you this, but the participants on the show work out an average of 5 hours a day.  They have basically nothing else to do and have almost unlimited access to a gym and trainers.  Also, the majority of the winners do admit after the show to using extreme measures in the last few weeks to lose weight and usually gain a lot back in the weeks after the show.

I just wish that the show was more real-life and would have people who are going about their normal lives, but with an emphasis on clean eating and exercise.

I like to watch the show and just remind myself that it is not really reality.  Otherwise I would get frustrated and depressed that I don't seem to lose weight as easily as they do.

someone on my fitness board bought that. I told her to use her husband . it would be cheaper and at least he'd get some results.

    lol
  • Any diet pills that say it only works with a diet and exercise plan.
Really?  Thank you for giving me a placebo and telling me what I already know.
  • LOL The Shake Weight had to have been invented by someone with a REALLY warped and perverted sense of humor....the commercial makes me laugh every time!!

The most ridiculous weight loss gimmick that absolutely tops my list is the "Master Cleanse" (same one Beyonce did)....."lemonade" made of lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper?  Really?  All you're losing is water weight, essentially.  TOTALLY useless, IMO.
  • edited April 2010
OH, here's another one:  FullBar.  Eat half a bar (or the whole thing), drink some water, and not eat as much food?  How is that different from watching what you eat and what the portion sizes are?  Wow.

Here's yet ANOTHER ridiculous weight loss gimmick:  "Acai Slim".  Great for getting an antioxidant boost, but that's all you're getting.

<div>Agree, those things are hilarious. That would be my choice for this topic =p</div>
  • My 16 year old daughter showed me the shake weight at Target and I almost peed myself laughing and being horrified at watching her hand movement.

i agree... you need to do that motion I'm sure your fiance' would be more than happy to help out!  Kiss
  • All of these things are ridiculous.  Weight loss comes from reduction in calories and working out.
  • IMHO - any pill/drink that promises weight loss without "watching what you eat" and exercise, is ridiculous.

and anything that is "proven to work with proper diet and exercise"

If you're doing "proper diet and exercise" you don't need anything more or anything less.

To be honest, I own the shake weight because arm flab is hereditary for me.
It's actually fairly intense if you stick to it. It's only been a couple of days and while I watch tv or wait for the laundry I do my exercise. But I dunno if it's worth as much as it costs, but it's not a bad purchase.
  • The other night, FI and I were watching a movie pretty late. When we turned it off TLC had turned into infomercials...and what was on was the MOST hilarious/ridiculous thing I have ever seen. You know those butterfly looking contraptions you put between your thighs and squeeze your legs??? It was like that, but you did it with your arms and the purpose of it was to MAKE YOUR BOOBS PERKIER!!!! We couldn't stop watching it, it was so funny. Apart from the fact that the infomercial was all super skinny models with fake boobs anyway. From what I saw, apparently it makes the girls go up and down....must have been invented by a man....

Exercising your arms will not get rid of arm flab, you can't spot reduce. You just have to lower your body fat and hopefully some of it will come off of your arms. Do some pushups, they're more effective than your silly shake weight. And free!

OMG I know! I actually liked their show, until the episode came on where they revealed that Kourtney's baby's daddy got a job with that weight loss company, and his first task was to find someone to endorse the product. Two days later I saw the commercial with Khloe and Kim. Rediculous!
  • I have to admit I broke down and bought Slim in 6, a workout DVD which is supposed to help you lose weight and tone up in 6 weeks. While it is fairly intense, It's really hard to stick to while the remote is staring at me, begging me to change the channel.
  • The Hawai'i Chair? I haven't even heard of that one.

  • The one that I think is the most ridiculous, and surprised that no one mentioned it is the "Flirty Girl Fitness."  It is basically a stripper pole and dvd's to exercise with.  It even comes with a "Chair dance" DVD!!  It's hilarious.  Yes, please teach me to be a dirty stripper.  I mean, i guess your man might like it, but seriously, turning it into an exercise program?  Too funny.
  • I laugh at the shake weight all the time... and then consider buying it... but then worry if someone saw in my window while driving by and put it back... lol

I did have that tummy shocker thing a while back... it zapped my tummy and made it tickle... but did nothing in the long run..

I had a treatment on a cruise once called a Ionathermie and it was like that zappie thingy on steroids... it almost HURT... but when I got up there was a pool of ooze under me... and all this gross came out of my skin and pores...and I lost like 3lbs in 2 sessions... But it was a cruise and that came back right after the chocolate buffet.
